Yes, truly frightening and informative. Ours was a remarkably non-propaganda laden tour. It was great to hear some of the stories about what goes on around there too. Lots of silly our building/flagpole/chairs are bigger than yours nonsense.

I highly recommend it.

Good friggin lord, the negativity on this board never ceases to amaze me. You get to go look at the world's last divided county's border and the world's most heavily armored border at that. There must be something to it.

Going to the DMZ is not a positive experience. Unless your idea of fun is seeing the world's largest mine field and the world's most dangerous this and that.

I was serious in my first post.

there have been other threads on this

the consensus is always that it is best to go on the USO tour.

it costs 44 dollars . You get to see the JSA , 3rd Tunnel and the Dora Observatory.

I went last weekend and it was great, the only problem being that I was in the same group as some obnoxious Irishman with a Malvinas badge on his bag living up to stereotype by showing up for the bus drunk at 7.15 AM. The most amusing part was when he showed his girlfriends passport to the american soldier to get into Panmunjom, probably in a 'look at me I amazingly have a girlfriend' way and got bollocked. But I made a conscious decision not to let him ruin my day at the start and had a great time.

Really good tour. Recommended.

I went on the USO tour last June and it was an interesting tour. I was disappointed with Dora Observatory and the fact that you had to stand so far back to get a picture. It's the one time I wish I had brought a midget along with me to stand on my shoulders and take a picture.

And yes, it is kind of a scary place.

There is a place you meet the bus, but I can't remember any of the info right now. I'm sure someone else has it.

How'd you book? Xanadu can book it for me but they said there are no tunnels on the USO tour. And they want 70,000.

Make sure you walk the correct way around the table in the meeting hut (you'll understand when you visit). I watched as our army tour guide 'threw the rattle out of the pram' because members of our party who had failed to understand his mumblings walked the wrong way around the table. I had only heard bad things about US army soldiers -they were all true. If you're not keen on verbal diarrhoea earplugs are advised.

Why would you want to spend your weekend with the 8th Army?

there are tunnels on the USO tour, but tbh it was probably the most boring part of the trip anyway.

you can find all the information on this page

http://www.uso.org/korea/

i just arranged it by email, transfered the cash and faxed the receipt of transfer.

easy

Actually, I thought the tunnels were pretty interesting. Granted you can't take any pictures down there, but it was worth it.

I worked there for 3 months back in '97, I chose to go there because the assignment was chill and alot of downtime.

I was lucky to be assigned there then because a Major working as the installationa S3 was promoted later to LTC and when I transferred to Yongsan in July, 1999, he remembered me and recommended me to join the UNC honor guard, now that was an awesome gig!!

....all in all, Camp Bonifas was cool!

As for the so-called KPLA "border observers" (most of whom were Psyops), they look menacing, but they were pretty cool too Very Happy
