On another thread, I saw this post:

I've tried many anti-depressant medications, but they didn't do anything for me. I'm sure that there are some people that do find relief from them and I'm happy for them.
That being said, I've seen a lot of examples of people who probably take anti depressant medications to avoid dealing with the root causes of their problems. The last state I lived in before coming to Korea was Utah. Utah is the state with the highest rate of anti-depressant use in the US. Psychiatrists there are very fully booked. |
and this response:

| Wow, Utah? I'd think the Mormons would be happy people. |
C and CC, would you care to respond? |
According to Mental Health America, Utah is the most depressed state in the US. I don't think it's difficult to see why Mormonism is likely a contributing factor. Interestingly, South Dakota has the happiest residents.

I think Christianity is a cult, so with that on the table, Mormons freak me out.
Someone handed me a "Chic Tract" comic back home and I was just in shock of how racist/backwards/xenophobic it was. I went a whole day thinking it was a sick joke and upon finding out it was real, I couldn't sleep very well. |
Yeah... Chick was a shock to me too. I was forced to realize that there are people out there who really think like this..
Not all that many of them, fortunately. |

The truth or falsity of a religion, idea, philosophy, etc. has no relation to how happy it makes people.
Believing something because it makes you happy to believe it is the definition of insincerity. |

Some religions do make such a claim whether overtly or implied. I don't know many people who sell their religion as "it won't help you at all in this life, but hey you will have eternal life as a reward for all your suffering."
TV preachers sure seem to sell wealth and happiness if you just fall on your knees and doate.
Long story short, some high profile representatives of religions make testable claims. |

Two of my favorite tests are:
"You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free."
John 8: 32
"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?"
Matthew 7: 15-16
Funny that people who try to push religion down your throat quote Bible verses galore, but they never use either of these verses. |
