I'd rather carry around a bulkier device with more capicity.
IF you want a player for jogging or gym then go shiny slim apple. If you want a player for bus, subway, weekend trips, flights etc then get a fully fledged PMP. |
i agree with noodfotographer and eamo.
i'd rather have a slightly bigger, larger capacity mp3 player. i carry a satchel most days, so the size matters little.
if i really, really want something small, for 80,000 won i can get a shuffle or something equivalent.
i'd go the archos ...
edit: actually, i just heard about hyperdrives ... they have a CF card slot, so i'd get 250 gb capacity. that would give me my movies, mp3s and on the go cf card backup ... and for that benefit, i wouldn't give a crap how big it was!! |

The Archos is a good player, I would recommend it to anyone who wants a high capacity media player. But is it slightly bigger than the ipod? Nope, it is almost 3x as thick, much heavier and carries a significantly larger footprint in your pocket. I wanted one of the 80 gb archos players for a while but it isn't made for carrying in your pocket. I wanted portable, as in I can carry it in my pocket with ease, the archos simply doesnt deliver here.
The Cnet comparison is good but isn't exactly fair for a number of reasons: The categories are in the archos favor (why didn't they compare the players as wifi devices?? Or mention the added features (contact browser, calculator, world clock, itunes wifi store, built in youtube player/browser, sychable calendars and expandibility??). When you look at the other things the touch can do it certainly has more features and thus an added value (cnet only compared price per gb, not exactly fair). Oh and the users ratings are considerably higher in favor of the touch, way more people using the touch and it still has a better user rating. |

I'm not familiar with the capabilities of the Archos beyond the fact that its high-capacity and, IIRC, doesn't require any conversion.
However, I don't think the Archos would be my first choice among the larger sized PMPs. From what I've read, their build quality leaves a lot to be desired. Also, there are plenty of Korean PMP manufacturers that are turning out really great devices. I seem to recall that a lot of people really liked their I-stations, and personally, I've found that Cowon also makes really good gear. The Cowon A3 or Q5 might be better than the Archos.
(I'd still go with the ipod Touch though. Once jailbroken, it's a pretty sweet little device.) |

i-Station are still selling their older V43 model. It's down to around 280,000 now.
30GB. 4.3'' screen. More features than you can shake a stick at. |

sorry to revamp this thread, but i was just looking at the new archos 705 ... and despite being 160 gig, it has NO support for CF cards or ability to read NEF raw files.
boooo! that's just stupid. archos is bragging that you can store over a million photos on this thing. yeah, a million, low quality jpg pieces of crap ... completely useless for photography. |

horses for courses ... i'd be using it primarily as a photo storage device, but the only import is via usb. useless for people downloading from CF or SD cards. i could buy a card reader, but that defeats the purpose.
i hate the way koreans will spend an hour on the subway, including the 3 minute walk between platforms at jamsil, with their eyes glued to the tv.
i'm not a big fan of movies on the go ... so i'm happy to sick an ipod in my pocket and have a bulk storage device in my pack to go with my camera.
hyperdrive would do that, and a nano or zune would suffice the music. it's two devices admittedly, but i don't have to carry both ALL the time. the bulk storage would only go where the camera goes ... and since i have a camera pack, it's not inconvenient.
archos is good ... but it's a multimedia player ... their info about photos is the biggest load of s h i t ever printed. 1.6 million low res jpgs?? please! |

Archos uses USB-on-the-go and some versions have card readers. |

jazblanc77 - some versions, yes ... the 160 gig version, no.
itaewon guy - as we talked about via pm, the hyperdrive colour is an on-the-go device, and it has the beauty of being able to switch drives, since it's fitted with a standard 2.5 inch laptop drive. i can go as high as 250gig with that, and it has built in card slots!!
most people want movies. i don't. i want photo storage. archos isn't suited to that demographic.
i really don't want to spend my life staring at a tv screen. it's backwards. music is plenty for me.

My girlfriend bought me an iPod Touch. Must say, its pretty slick. The only think that kinda sucks is the lack of control buttons for volume, pause/play, etc, but its not the end of the world. Double click the home button and those controls come right up.
I did the jailbreak hack or whatever you call it......easy as pie, just go to a website and it does it!! I added mail.app, weather, notes, along with tons of games, NES and GBA emulators, and other crap. Cruising around Seoul, there is usually an access point available so everything is available to use......The calendar and notes are key for me, as I have the memory of a goldfish.
I can't stop playing with it.....and it all fits into my pocket while barely noticing it. |

That's what sold me on the Touch. I was torn between that and a Nokia N800. Also, I use iTunes for my music collection and iPhoto for my photos. The Touch syncs with both perfectly. The second biggest factor for me is size. I need something I can put in a dress shirt pocket.
Nokia N800: 1447513 mm
iPod Touch: 110628 mm
That's a pretty big difference in your pocket. Observe:

| Added benefit to the touch is that once jail broken, there is a tonne of added functionality now including Voip! |

| Personally, I find the main problem with the ipod touch is tha fact that you have to convert every video file into the format that it will play; this often is unsuccessful and time consuming. I think the archos will play loads of different formats, i think one came out that even plays xvid. |

I have converted hundreds of videos (from downloads to ripped dvds) to play in my touch. It is ridiculously easy and I have never had a problem doing it. Try using handbrake if you are having difficulties. It is idiot proof software that works well. |
