Esl has to be the best no-skill-neccesary job going today. Hours anywhere from 12 to 22 or 30 per week, health ins, return flights upgradable to biz class, decent vacations from 2 weeks to 4 months per year for some. Free accommodation. Nil taxes for the first 2 years(in Korea). I don't see things changing much apart from careful evaluation of foreigners(crims/pedos/druggies) entering the ROK. Koreans are smart enough to know the significance of speaking English for upward mobility in both Korea and internationally. Also, Koreans are hell-bent on upstaging the nipponese so koreans focus is on high-speed improvement in all they do. Students getting good school scores means a ticket to other countries and a secure future for the parents as well as the student and perhaps the rest of the family.
On the other side, like in the US finding a job with insurance and benefits is of most peoples concern oftentimes more than then the pay itself. I'm lucky to be living the american dream well because I have loot, a flashy car and a flashy house in a flashy part of town. Others don't have it so good. Make the most of your time in asia. Returning home to the west means a reality check and an end to the vacation. |
