What do you listen to Steve? |
I listen to music, not talentless noise, which is what most of heavy metal, disco, rap, and hip-hop really is.
My listening habits are eclectic: sometimes rock (when it was still really rock, i.e. before the CARS disbanded), sometimes jazz, Chinese traditional and pop standards, a little bluegrass, country, and what used to be called country rock. I also enjoy some big band music, but mostly live and with dancing, doo wop, and 50's crooners. I love MoTown across the gamet, lots of R&B present and past, some folk music of the early '60s and a few contemps, classical music across the spectrum, and traditional Christmas fare. I also like most Hawaiian music, especially the current wave of local fare.
Artists (in no particular order): Springsteen, BTO, CCR, Neil Young, CSN, Doobies, Eagles, Dylan, James Taylor, The Who, America, Beatles, Four Tops, Supremes, Glen Miller, Anita Baker, Tracy Chapman, Gordon Lightfoot, Temptations, Seals and Croft, Simon/Garfunkel, John Cougar Mellencamp, Tina Turner, Sinatra, Phil Ochs, Cars, Glen Campbell, Bruddah Iz, Neil Diamond (before '77), Tom Waits, The Band, Jackson Browne, Steve Miller, Jim Croce, The Platters, Nat King Cole, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Everly Brothers, Marvin Gaye, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Andrea Bocelli, Moody Blues, Boston, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Don McLean, Dire Straits, Miles Davis, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Gloria Estafan, Wynton Marsalis, and Aretha Franklin. |
What exactly is the difference between music and talentless noise? What gives you the right to determine what is and isn't music?
I suggest you listen to some Cage, Reich, Xenakis, Penderecki (Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima!!), Partch, Stockhausen, Schoenberg, Webern or anybody else truly talented from the past 100 years.
I'm sorry, you can't appreciate anything that doesn't have a strict V-I resolution, but that's no excuse to say that music that doesn't suit your taste is "talentless noise".
Wake up. Music left you behind over a hundred years ago. |

I used to detest disco and heavy metal but most of this current wave of jingles can't even be dignified with the label music.
But I'm not surprised the OP, a wannabe streetboy, is into this sort of noise.
Wonder why so many Koreans like to imitate the ghetto trend. Found very little of this in China but then most pop Chinese music is actually melodious. |
Disco is way better than rap. I love the K-tel classics like You Sexy Thing
by Hot Chocolate or Love Rollercoaster. I'm also a big fan of The Bee Gee's and The Village People. Eveyones a Winner is another great disco song that was covered by The Stranglers.
Second to K -tel I'm also a big fan of the Oi compilation punk records.
Bands like The Buisness or Blitz and The Cockney Rejects |

Not exactly a ringing endorsement but, hey, I'll give you that. At least disco has rhythm.
To all the adolescents who recoiled to my response:
Didn't know BTO played in their prime a century ago or that classic jazz is for grandparents. Regardless, not being willing to listen to those on that list is it's own punishment.
I'm sure that I could locate a smattering of bands post-1985 that I'd be able to listen to for more than a few minutes. But the pop music today is complete crap, even Timberlake and his lot. No stories to tell, no protests to make--the artists who are exceptions are rare exceptions, in my view. How many songwriter-singers are there today who can match the range of a Dylan, a Young, a Springsteen, Lennon, Henley, or a Mitchell?
What gives me the right to criticize it? Well, other than being entitled to my opinion, which was solicited on this thread, I'd say real music lovers should expose the sham that most hip-hop and rap is. It doesn't deserve recognition and most of it is an insult to the Black American music tradition (and I'm hardly alone in that assertion). Add to that the police bashing, the foul language, and the ho-pimp gangsta mentality and it amounts to social degeneration. Of course, those of twg and his ilk eat it up and the ghetto goes global. |

If mainstream pop music is the only music you think exists today, you're laughably unqualified to even be commenting in this thread. Go back to what you like, and stop trying to explain away your ignorance with scattershot condemnations of what you see through the keyhole. |

Probably a lot. However, those artists came out at a time when the music and ideas they put out were considered to be pioneering styles.
Now it's all been categorized, packaged, repackaged, remixed, modified, and commodified. It's really not possible for artists to take a grassroots approach to create new forms of music without posturing or being gobbled up by the overextensive monopolistic music industry.
Music doesn't mean s#it because it can't anymore, and people have moved well past taking the opinions of music artists seriously outside of entertainment news blips. Remember when a certain member of the Beatles made religious comments that were broadcast all over the world and criticized because of their controversy? Me neither, I wasn't born yet.
Want another Woodstock? Contact Pepsi and AT&T, or risk throwing an obscure hippie fest with unknown bands. |

Ha! ha! It's true! I'm so ghetto. Here's a photo of my crib to prove it:
You can't see me right now, but I'm doing that "three snap/ head bob" thing we do in the hood.

There was a rumor a few years back that NWA was getting back together, possibly with Snoop in the mix. Someone asked Snoop about Eminem possibly being in the mix and Snoop said no, it was Nigaz With Attitude. |
hahahahah thats funny...
still I dont think Snoop should be in it.. he is not really gangsta hard enough for NWA.. he is to smooth.. with Ezy E gone , you need someone with that high pitch tone with attitude to cover for him..
DAMN that album was awesome when it first came out.. DAMN!! |
They got back together, with Snoop, and toured about 7 years ago. |
