yup that happened to me today at the Woori Bank Hongik Univ Station branch today where I have wired my paycheck back to the states for the past 2 years. Before the guy would put in the form, i had to state what reason I was sending money back on the form.
I asked why I was being asked this the guy said "all foriegners now have to declare this"
I was torn between " none of your friggin business" and " i need to pay off my Mexican supplier who is shipping across 5 kilos of heroin across the border tomorrow"

I need to have a large sum of money in the US in case my family has
an emergency. If Korean banks were directly linked to the ACH system
then I could keep my money here. |

I had no problem last Thursday. No reason given (to pay my car insurance in the US,) and nothing written in my passport. |

This is illegal. The only people who may write or stamp your passport are government officials representing embassies, foreign consulates, customs and immigrations offices. |

I think the way some of the banks are handling transfers out of country is starting to become an even bigger deal-breaker than the new E-2 regs.
Working in a foreign nation and sending money home has been a tradition as long as long as there's been people willing to do so. |

the whole banking system for foreigners has become one huge pain in the arse lately, between the atm debacle and now all these hoops you got to go through just to send what IS LEGALLY PERMISSABLE to do is nuts
imagine if banks in North America asked Koreans these questions, not allow Koreans ATM cards etc, they'd go nuts |

That's what I thought when reading this. They can't write in your passport! I would even go as far as saying that they shouldn't even be bringing your passport nor your ARC behind them to make photocopies. I've let them do this (since there really is no worry), but they really shouldn't be doing this. Banks don't require pictures on file. All they need is your ID to look at at the counter and your signature. Bunch of jerks here. I deal with Shin Han. While they never wrote anything in my passport when transferring money, they did require a pay statment the last time. No big deal, but they take waaaaaaaaaaay too damn long to do anything. The guy or girl you're dealing with is taking calls at the same time you're dealing with them. And they're chit chatting away with people... And they're counting huge stacks of money right in front of your nose.
When I replaced my bank card last week, the clerk asked me for my secret number. So I typed my pin number in and it didn't work. He kept saying "secret number, secret number!" I was like, "I don't know what the hell that is! You have my bank book, my signature, my passport, my ARC, and you most likely have my pin number written down, too." Then he gets all confused and asks me to phone a Korean friend and I just sat there and looked stupid. I needed money out of my account and I wasn't leaving till I got it. I told him to forget about the card for today because I was in a hurry, but he gets a Korean on the phone to explain to me that I need my secret number. Told her the wholel story about having my bankbook, etc. and she sounded like "What a dumbass you're dealing with." She talked to him again. He handed the phone back to me, etc. I finally said, "Me want money now" and got it.
Then what's this deal about when you get a card and them having your goddmaned pin number? The whole bank knows your pin number. That's the strangest thing I've ever enountered.
I'll be the banks here, especially in the country, would be some easy to rob. My friend and I were talking about that one day in Taiwan. He said that they have no security. This was in pretty much bumfk, Taiwan... All you'd have to do is dig a hole and have some tools and do some research on alarms...
Then you'd never have to teach another day in your life.
Guess that's why they ask us all these questions or get us to prove this and that... We could rob them. That guy counting really huge stacks of money right in front of me just proves it. If I had had some sort of battery operated computer skinny stretch arm grabber thing, I'll bet I could've swooped a stack of that and put it in my backpack with no one knowing any different. Cameras or no cameras.
Not that I'd do that. I don't want to go to prison. Nor would I feel right about it. Hmm. |
