I'm a little past the halfway point of doing the Masters program at USQ (Southern Queensland) and the reading requirement is fairly heavy though not overwhelming. I started doing two courses a semester (3 fifteen week semesters a year) and am doing three now, though I'm not working at a job now which makes it easier. All the profs seem nice, though some are very hands on and others are very hands off. Not sure which I prefer.
Some courses seem easy and others are quite demanding. All require some understanding of education theory (very useful, that) though there is some overlap that comes in handy later on. The thing that bugs me most if reading from Adobe Acrobat .pdf files, which are a pain to read online and don't seem to print out properly half the time. Although it's a boon to online learing I'm about to kill those Adobe people... |

try uninstalling acrobat and reinstalling. I've never had a problem. |

Bump!
Well, I am nearing the end of the first semester at MQ. 4 more to go. Not sure I shouldn't have gone for the USQ MA, it's cheaper. The first couple of essays were really hard, but after I had acquainted myself with the new terminology and the APA writing style it got easier. I think I will take three courses next term, I have begun to realise that there is a lot more reading assigned than is absolutely necessary. It is actually interesting stuff, and not that hard. If you have the bucks, do it. If not, well.....
Not sure you couldn't be a great teacher without it. |

Which classes did you take? LING 936,937, &938 are quite easy, though I'm struggling with finishing the essay for 938 now.
I took LING 906 (testing) and the reading load was very intense and I found it necessary to read everything 3 times before I could fully understand it and apply it ot my essays.
One of my colleagues is taking SLA (don't know couse number) and he said the reading was even more intense than testing.
BTW - where in Korea are you? perhaps we can bounce ideas off one another. |

You DO NOT need to read everything in your course materials in order to pass your courses. In fact, I would advise against it.
First, read and decide on your essay topics.
Go to the library and obtain the relevant sources needed to write your essays.
Then read up as much as you can on your chosen topics and write your papers.
Don't spend wasted time on reading up on material that won't be needed for your assignments.
Get your papers out of the way first and then read the other stuff later, if at all. |

I disagree with TECO. I think that the "other" stuff is necessary background information. You have to read it like it is background infomation though - lighter than the material you need for your essay.
Besides I found that the lighter material has helped me in some ways to focus my essays |

| MQ. It's ten credits to the USQ eight. My folks are helping me pay for it and they were kind of put off by USQ's website and former technical college status, so, in order to get them to help me I had to go for the more expensive (and 5 semester as opposed to four option). Will an employer care? No, likely not. I have just been hired at a good uni in Seoul, so this course is now an investment in the future as opposed to a way to get a better job in Korea. Oh well, I'll take it. The uni pays an extra W200,000 per month for an MA as opposed to a BA so I would have to work there a long time to pay for the MA. This will cost me AU$14,500.00 all told. $13,500 CDN. Maybe I will transfer to USQ...........MQ had a better track for the PHD, though. I think. |

| I just found out I got into the MQ masters applied ling course for 04. I'm now trying to decide whether to renew at my hagwon (from April)with 9-3 Mon - Fri hours, or try for another spot closer to the big smoke (more school choice and book availability). Any thoughts? |

| I am taking SLA right now, it's 912. It was a hard one to take in the first term. I wrote an essay on Critical Hypothesis Theory. It was pretty hard. Haven't even started the second essay, it's due in two weeks. Yikes! |

I think an MA can open up a lot of doors for you. Like the door out of Korea if that is your goal. I was enrolled in the MA from Macquarie (sp) and was totally frustrated with the administration side of (materials late late late, the cost (which I have never figured out.....but is much more than quoted on their website or brochures). I am not saying it is a bad program, but I would be careful. I have changed over to the University of New England in Australia. The program looks ok. It's fairly, but they did win an award last year.
Good Luck! |
Has anyone else who studied with Macquarie had these complaints? Are the costs so different from those quoted on their site. $400 per credit point this year. |

| They took three months to send back my last assignments. That said, they gave me multiple extensions on assignments well past the end of term so I wasn't that unhappy with them. The cost, well, yeah. It's a lot more than USQ which accepted me as well. Still not sure why I didn't do that one, it is a lot less and a whole semester shorter. Oh well. |

| Is there anyone out there who has finished a degree from USQ and found that it has not been worth as much as one from other universites? |
