Come one, come all!

We're going to simulate the Iowa Caucus!

No one seems to know how the GOP does it, so, our Republican caucus will follow the method used by Iowa democrats, small d and big D.

All you have to do is declare yourself a "Dave's Republican".

You have 2 days to register (maybe less at this point). Registration ends at midnight on the 26th.

Come learn, participate, and find out more about this wonderful exercise of civic duty!

Note: You don't even have to be American to take part in this joyous demonstration of democracy!

If you're in, say: Let's do it!

I'm in - it's about time a candidate affiliated with a cult became President!

Sorry, can't. I'm registered Democrat. Ya-Ta won't let me participate. Laughing Oh, well, maybe in four years.

Here's how the caucus works on the Republican side...

Everyone registers to vote. The number of people that have registered provides your baseline for determining the number of delegates your causus will generate.

The caucusers vote for the candidate they prefer. In the Republican caucus you are only allowed one choice, if you choose a candidate that is not viable you are not allowed to change your vote to a viable candidate. You pick only once.

Compare the number of votes cast for a candidate with the number of total registered voters. In order for a candidate to be viable they must have at least 15% of the total vote. One delegate for each candidate is selected, and they represent the percentage of the caucus that chose that candidate, similar to the national conventions of both parties.

For example. (just assuming how this would go on this board, hehe)

10 people register...

5 vote for Ron Paul
2 vote for Giuliani
1 vote for Thompson
1 vote for Huckabee
1 vote for Romney

So, only Paul and Giuliani would would get a delegate. Giuliani would represent 30% of the votes at the next level caucus, the county caucus, Paul would have 70%.

That's pretty much how it works.

Wow, you're one bitter, sarcastic, master-of-the-sneer dude.

Thanks Czar. Does that mean nobody gets to go into separate rooms? Kind of kills the fun. Confused

But OK.

Actually, I've been to two Dem caucuses, and we never went into different rooms. I think Ya-Ta meant that euphemistically.

Actually the caucuses I've gone too have been rather raucous as far as back and forth between the candidates various supporters is concerned.

At the last one I was trying to caucus for Wesley Clark. The caucusers lined up about 50/50 Kerry/Edwards with just enough stragglers to make up the required 15%, which was 16 of us. The Kucinich people refused to support Clark because he was a former general. (Yeah, that's what I said.) I would have caucused for Kucinich but for the idiots who were supporting him. One of the hold outs wanted to caucus for LaRouch, who I don't even think was a candidate in Iowa that year funnily enough. Once it became apparent that we weren't going to pull together for another candidate the Kerry/Edwards groups just started yelling for us to join them. It was like the game red rover. Caucuses are an odd way to carry out the selection of a candidate.

Hmm... I might change my registration here to Republican and withdraw from the Democratic caucus to get a member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints elected.

If I were to do so, it would weaken Obama's position - and open the door for Richardson (but he's so fat that he might not fit through the doorway...)

If I don't switch, it would fittingly leave "nowhere man" with no participants for a mock Republican caucus ...

At that point, he should seriously consider changing his avatar name to
"no caucus man" ...

I'm fat myself - that's why I'm not running ...

(Then again, if I ran more - maybe I wouldn't be fat ...)

And I could use the avatar name "no fat man" ...
