I will be teaching a winter camp at my public school. It is 8 classes a day for 5 days a week for 2 weeks. To me, that signifies that I should be getting paid 18 hours above the 22 per week. My school seems to be computing it this way: I will be in school only 6 hours 20 minutes a day and so I should only get paid for 8 extra hours above the 22 (6 times 5 equals 30 which is 8 above the 22 alloted before overtime kicks in).

Who is right?
This is public school, gepik, and although some people say 20 is the max during vacation period I don't see that on my contract. I only see 22 on my contract. Where do some people come up with 20 hours?

thanks

you work 22 "class" hours a week, not actual hours. They need to pay you OT for 18 classes. Also, seems like they're being jerks for making you do so many classes in one day.

yes and no, your school is trying to be clever and it's obvious that they are trying to rip you off. in our contracts it does say, 22 teaching hours a week, however most schools consider this a classroom hour (usually, elementary schools=40m, MS=45m, HS=50m). your school is trying to be picky and are counting full hours, not a classroom hours, which they can do unless your contract states something like, teaching 22 classes of 45 minutes each.

BUT you can (and should) just refuse. my contract states that working OT is optional, u only have to do your 22 teaching hours a week.

or just give them an ultimatum: pay me per classroom hour (18hrs OT) or i won't teach anything beyond 22hrs/week.

I can't just refuse; it will mess everything up. I can't figure out why they would compute it differently just for winter camp. They don't make me teach 22 actual hours during the week, so why change now? I am so tired of having to fight for stuff like this. Really.

they are doing this on purpose so that they have to pay u less. i haven't heard of another school calculating teaching hours like this. they are cheating u and they know it.
my school doesn't usually make me teach the full 22hrs a week during the term time too, but it's not that they're being nice-- classes are cancelled for test prep, fieldtrips, festival practice, etc. i personally wouldn't do it just because at my school, if they see that i don't stand up for myself, they will do it again and again.

it's your choice, good luck either way!

They get revenue for camp. So instead of being stuck with a finite budget, they will try to take in as much money as possible.

Did you ask this question before?
I can't remember who your contract is with?
How much time does it stipulate you work during vacation time?

THIS is with gepik
I asked them ahead of time if I would get paid extra and they said yes
Then when I saw the winter camp budget I noticed the pay was for 30 hours a week even though I am teaching 40 40 minute classes a week
They asked me to give some of my vacation time back and teach instead because they said the contract was 21 days vacation not 21 working days
So they are making me feel guilty for standing up for myself all the time

Sorry my puncutation marks aren't working on my computer

This kind of thing is very common, even at public schools in Korea. Someone is always skimming off the top in the office and the accounting office. They work together to "make the most" out of your being there.

This doesn't bother me unless it causes me more work or the skimming starts dipping into my pocket. You do not have to put up with that. Be polite but f
