Marmot's Hole is reporting on this:

http://www.rjkoehler.com/2007/12/24/goodbye-afkn/

Anybody have satellite? Is it expensive/worth it?

Maybe if we lose AFKN I'll finally get the Discovery Channel back as a free channel.

The sattelite dish costs around $85 and the monthly service is (or was) around $30 a month. Only those authorized by US law to shop in the US Armed Forces Exchanges may purchase the dish and service. It's illegal to purchase the dish and service for resale or transfer to someone not authorized to obtain the dish and service on their own.

You can get the Discovery Channel as a free channel right now if you have access to the Internet. Go to www.wwitv.com and click on the US [a-l] link and finally on the numeral to the right of Discovery.

I wasn't talking about an AFKN satellite dish. Just whatever dish is on the Korean market. I can't remember the name of it, but I see it on some of my neighbors' houses. I'd be interested to get information on it.

I don't care so much about AFKN or Discovery Channel specifically, it's just that when I feel like channel surfing I'll only have OCN, Super Action, and CNN to Choose from. Oh yeah and Arirang I guess....

I'm getting plenty of channels on that website I provided above. The dish for AFN has the settings (remember that a sattelite dish isn't just the receiver; it's a bunch of other things to protect (supposedly) the provider of the signals) for AFN's service.

The site shows promise.

If there's something I really want to watch I usually just find it for download somewhere, but that can get tedious too. Thanks for the referral.

I moved yesterday near the express bus terminal. Turned on the little TV above the kitchen counter and on channel 2, I get AFKN. Not close to the base, so not sure why I get it. I lived about 2 miles from here before and never got AFKN.

I had AFKN everyday since 2001. (Didn't matter where I lived -it was only on the TV).

I finally stopped getting it - in early 2008.

Don't know what happened - it just stopped.

I think you can get AFN with a pair of rabbitears (antenna). There is a new gym at my school and on each of the treadmills they have a tv. The first time I went, I flipped on the TV and started going through the channels. My first thought was, "well there is no cable." However, I found AFN. The picture isn't pefect, but it's better then nothing.

I have cable at home, but was going to look and see if I could find a set of rabbitears to try to get AFN at here.

I thought that too, but couldn't get it at my old place. Maybe this new place has a better antenna. But I get AFKN as clear as all the other stations. Really good for over-the-air reception.

I know at the gym it comes in on channel 34. My house isn't that far away (about 1km) from the gym.

I am willing to bet that if you join the US army, you will get AFKN for free.

The Express Bus Terminal is just across the river from Yongsan army base. The army base is also at a higher elevation, so I don't see why you couldn't get it.

Before C&M cable cut it off I could turn off my cable by pushing a button on the remote and was still able to get AFN and a few other channels. Now, there isn't a button I can push to get any channels.

I think it is possible without being part of the U.S. military but I'm not sure how. In fact a U.S. military person told me so. All that needs to be done is to connect a wire somewhere or something. However, don't expect the picture to be perfect.

I'm waiting for the directions?
