I had a computer built at yongsan yesterday. It was supposed to have a 500gig SEAGATE Sata HD. But he put in a Western Digital. Should I be concerned?
I also specified 4 gigs of Ram. But only 3.5 gigs show up when I look under system properties. Is this usual as HD space shows up as less than the disks actually are.

Thanks.

In my opinion the difference in price and quality between those 2 brands of HDD are negligible. No worry.

The RAM thing is a windows issue. You are running 32 bit windows and it can only address 3.5 gigs of RAM. IF you want to use all 4 gigs you will have to switch to a 64 bit version of windows (XP-64 bit or VISTA 64 bit).

Can you list the complete specs and the price you paid for it?

The HDD shouldn't be a problem and don't sweat the memory.

Is this a dual core or quad core?

I don't know if there's much difference between the HDs you stated.

You probably have 4GB of memory but your computer or OS cannot address the full range. I think you need a 64bit OS but am not sure.

Others will respond here.

But, please more details on your system.

WD is about 3,000 Won cheaper retail wise. As a reseller he made an extra 10,000 Won. I used to like seagates but they get loud after about two months.
On the other hand WD...
1. I had a 160GB one die after only two months. Lost everything.
2. A friend had his laptop WD die after three months. Recovered data.
3. Another friend had hers die after two months. Lost everything.

These days I go with Samsung. They stay quiet.

If you want to use 4GB+ you need to be running a 64 Bit OS.

Thanks for the quick replies.
I bought this system yesterday.

Intel Core2Duo E4500 a 2.2 Ghz
Asus P5kpl
4 gig Samsung DDR2
500 gig WD harddrive
ATI Radeon 2400pro 256mb
dvd supermulti drive

price 800,000

Did I get a fair deal?

Is the WD also a SATA or an IDE?

If not, then you got ripped off and go back and demand a SATA. They have higher transfer rates.

Also, if the WD is still an IDE, then the wide cable gives inferior air circulation .

So it does make a difference.

Seems a bit steep...I'll price it on the net.

E4500 130,000
P5kpl 75,000
500 gig WD harddrive 100,000
ATI Radeon 2400pro 256mb 65,000
dvd supermult 30,000
memory 100,000 (probably cheaper)
w/ case a nd psu and some inexpensive peripherals I'd say 600,000 maybe a smidgen more for that system. You must have a monitor included in that price....I HOPE!
Very Happy

WD drives are great.. personally I think you are better off with the WD than the seagate.. I have owned my WD's for 6 years and have not had ONE PROBLEM with them... I swear by them.. and if you look in pc forums you will notice its the preferred brand by most geeks.. seagate was good becuase they were cheapest thats all.. quality wise WD has them beat..

and having SATA or IDE

there is noway you have a IDE drive like someone said..
and if for some very strange case you do.. then its no big deal
as everyone used them pre 2003.. they are FINE!!
but you mother board is a SATA board.. so you have sata im sure..

you have a good system dude and at decent price..
next time you should build your own online with a site like ICODA and they will put it together for you for 20bucks..
but anyway you got a good system, the guy who sold it didnt make that much profit end of the day he is in business some posters here might say you over paid becuase they think the store owner shouldnt EAT!!!

It is a SATA drive. Thanks for the encouragement. When I bought it we went through item by item. The guy was professional and explained why I needed or didnt need something based on what I use the machine for.
I didnt think the price was that bad as I compared to a dellkorea system and another poster's recent purchase on this forum. I should have done a little more homework, but all in all im pleased. Next time I will definitely build my own.

I'm on WinXp x64 to make use of my 4gigs of ram.

Basically it's the same for features, except printer and webcam driver support seem to be a problem. That's the only issue I've run into so far. Otherwise, works like a charm Smile

It's not a Windows issue, its a hardware issue.
