|
|
Yesterday, I was having lunch in Itaewon with some GEPIK friends, and I was told that during the Q&A session, after most people left, Bain Dae said that GEPIK will not post the official list of rural schools because the schools don't want anyone to know which ones are supposed to pay the extra money for being in rural areas. Evidently, some teachers are getting the rural pay and others who teach in schools in the same area are not. Also, she said that if the school forces you to ask to be placed in another school, then you must sign for another full year and the time you spent at the first school is wasted time. It won't count towards severance or pension. That's what was reported to me by some GEPIK teachers.

Rural pay system is a joke. The school right across the street from mine is considered rural. Its funny because that school is bigger, newer, and gives their native teacher a LOT more perks than i have. |

There is something missing in that report and I was standing right behind Dain and Wenise up at the stage after the Q&A time and I didn't hear anything like that at all.
Pension is paid into and receiving or not receiving it has nothing to do with the school. If they didn't pay in, file a complaint and get it paid up.
If you complete your year you get severance. If you don't, you don't. Transfering to a new school is a new contract with a new employer so the clock starts again.
I don't know about the statement regarding rural designated schools but I suspect that if Dain said it, she was shooting her mouth off again without knowing what she is talking about - a bad habit of hers and unfortunate for us.
Thank goodness she is no longer dealing with those of us at the elementary schools. For someone with a kiwi accent she sure behaves like a hakwon tout.

Yes, her accent shakes my fillings out and pushes invisible pins through my eyes and ear drums.
I do believe she goes with the "if I say something it's better than nothing "approach.
I like it when she sends emails in big letters as well when she is trying to get her point across. |

Which person at GEPIK should be contacted about rural pay? My school said they would look into it and have since brushed it under the carpet. Does anyone has an email address for someone at GEPIK who could look into it? thanks |

Utter BS. Pension is yours whether you finish a year or not, whether they deduct it or not, whether they deduct it and sumbit the money to the pension office or not. |

Tell me how that works?
(Seriously, cause I've got a friend who's been working for a Kid's Club--yeah, *I* know--and she's getting seriously dicked around.) |

If they deducted it, but not remitted it, a complaint to the pension office will get a caseworker on their ass to strongarm the money out of them and add it to your pension account.
If they did not deduct it, a complaint to the pension office will get a caseworker to oversee your payment of your contributions to the school, THEN the caseworker will be on their ass to strongarm the money out of them and add it to your pension account.
I and 3 of my ex-coworkers did it to our last uni boss. He failed to pay a full year's pension... he got reamed over the phone by the head penson guy in Jamsil THEN he was forced to pay our money in full THEN he was fined several millions PERSONALLY (not the uni) for breaking pension laws.
We all got our money even though our contract said we were "part-time" workers (but still worked more than 80 hours a month... the minimum required for mandatory pension enrollment) |

Let me get this straight...if you don't renew your contract, they don't give you severance?

This is one area in the GEPIK contract that confuses and bothers me. If the school is the employer, then what purpose does GEPIK serve? I thought we are working under the GEPIK "program." If I want to change schools, I'm still working under GEPIK. Therefore I consider my employer to be the same. Sure, my school pays me, but all of the schools receive funding from the GEPIK/government, so why is transfering schools considered a new employer? |

Gepik, Epik etc are all supported through govt. funds. The schools liaise through the POE. If you forget to claim entitlements OT rates, contracted rates, holidays, etc you only provide more ammo for the soju parties as these funds must be dispersed honestly and documented.
Are POEs leaving it to schools to "overlook" wage entitlements? If you are missing out, inform your supervising teacher to look into it for you. Request a stamped document to prove why you aren't being paid. That will rattle a few trees. Do not accept "don't ask for backpay" claptrap.
Forget about upsetting k-jung or whoever says you should be respecting korean ways. POE workers and your own K-co-workers wil transfer anyway in the New Year. Make hay while you can and forget about doing "them" a "favor" |

What GEPIK doesn't seem to understand is that eventually everyone will find out which schools are supposed to pay the extra 100,000 won for teaching in a rural district, an everyone who was cheated will leave GEPIK. |
