Don't worry, Draz; you'll have it soon enough. That and any other affliction that's transmittable by having the entire population of the school, neighborhood, bus, train, or store coughing directly into your face. (That's if it's transmittable that way; you'll get all the other stuff, though.) |

Here is what the nifty little form in my renewal contract package for Busan's EPIK program says (complete with the bad punctuation as it is in the actual form):

"What does the English translation provided say," you ask?
Hah! You must've forgotten what government we're dealing with here, friend! This is Korea. There is no English translation provided for a directive that only affects certain foreigners who must comply or lose their jobs.
So, for fun, let's plug the above into our friendly free Korean->English translator:

Of course, I got all this on my way out the door on the very last school day of the year, with absolutely no way of getting any of this started until the middle of next week. Oh, and the deadline is January 18, 2008. You know, during my so-called vacation which I will now spend getting poked, prodded, and scoped out and not for free by a long shot.
We EPIKers have essentially two weeks to get:
- TBPE test (can't be from a clinic; must be from a hospital)
- Canibinoid test (can't be from a clinic; must be from a hospital)
- HIV test (oddly enough, this one can be from a clinic)
And apparently the criminal background check is not required for those of us already on the EPIK and renewing. Or maybe it is.
Anyone with halfway decent skills in translating governmentese Korean? Please post what that mess above really says. Thanks in advance. |

I am coming to Korea at the end of February. Does anyone know if I can have the medical exam done here in Canada with my own doctor? I don't really feel comfortable being examined by a strange doctor in another country... |

about 10 to 15 million people in the United States have a latent TB infection which could develop into active TB, in addition the multi-drug resistant strains are growing more and more common. also, they do test for malaria. Is it that big of a jump to think that because you are interested in moving to korea you might have visited other countries where you can easily catch these diseases? |

As much as Korea deserves to be piled on for their backwards xenophobia, you don't get into Bachelor of Education programs without a TB test.
Of course, passing or failing has nothing to do with kimchi, chopsticks proficiency or loudness of spitting. |

The American authorities should ask for an apostillized psychiatric evaluation from all applying Korean students to American universities that they are at a low level of propensity to commit mass murder on campus. |

I'm not American, but still find this thinly veiled remark on Virginia Tech, both offensive & racist. These guys were American:

He's not being racist. He's making a point about the Korean government's racism. Yes, it's not a subtle point, but, then, neither is the Korean government's. The suggested over-reaction is just as ludicrous as the over-reaction the Korean government has in place now.
And with typical Korean government "planning," it's ill-thought, uncoordinated, and nonsensical in its implementation. |

Ditto. I'm planning on going at the end of February as well, and would like to at least investigate the possibility of doing it here instead of there.
Also, what exactly are the TBPE/Cannabis tests? I thought the drug screening was just going to be a blood/hair sample or something. |

I'm not being racist, I'm being realistic. Immigration policy all over the world is based on reciprocity. Koreans want to come to North America to study and North Americans want to come to Korea to work. I was stating that if Korean officials make it excessively hard for North Americans to do that, than North American immigration should likewise be hard on Koreans going there. This whole thing was brought about by that one Canadian who was busted. Immigration policy being completely revamped because of one guy. So, I said, in response to that short sighted and discriminatory policy (because only foreigners have to jump through the hoops, not bus drivers, helpers, cooks, co-teachers, directors, etc.) North America should reciprocate by asking for a psych evaluation from all potential Korean students wishing to study in North America (based on yes one single case of a Korean kid shooting up a school). It's petty, it's silly, it's discriminatory, but that is how immigration policy works. Why do you think Americans can't stay here as long as Canadians can? Because we require a visa of all Korean tourists entering the States. Reciprocity like that, also would then force Korean officials to rethink this racist policy. If enough Korean students and their rich parents start complaining that they can't get into Stanford and Yale anymore because of something coming up on the psych eval, or the medical reports show that he once had this or that, or the criminal record check shows that he was busted for a DUI back in 1999, then maybe Korean policy would change towards us. |

Canada and the US are two VERY different places. Only a few thousand Americans want to come to Korea to work. This seems to be more of a Canadian "thing." |

Fair enough, 'beast'. Your stance is much clearer now. 1 person (CPN) out of 17,000 Native Speakers in Korea, does not an emergency make. Ditto for the 1 Korean (Cho Seung-Hui), out of about 2 million Koreans currently residing / studying in the US. |
