is this supposed to be a slap at nikon?
seriously, neither nikon or canon are categorically superior. both are the leaders of the camera/dslr/slr market. both have products that are great. but as companies, neither is definitively "better".
the whole nikon vs canon war is for retards. both are good and preferences come down to need and personal taste.
---
to the OP, canon make good point and shoots. so do sony. if you're talking point and shoot market, i think sony would be hard to go past in terms of technology.
nikon/canon are top tier ...
olympus are top tier too ... take a look at their waterproof 7mp point and shoots. VERY good cameras. their dslrs are also awesome, but geared towards a more 'niche' market of users.
sony, fuji, pentax, panasonic are also good (second tier) ... sony are particularly good.
i'd put kodak, casio and samsung on the third tier.
that be my $0.02 |
No slap on Nikon, sorry if that's how it sounded.
A Nikon is a Nikon like a Canon is a Canon, safe bets on almost any
purchase. There are second tier cameras that stand out for certain
qualities the Finepix F31fd for ISO performance, the Sony T2 for memory
capacity, for shock proof and water proof there is the Olympus Stylus
790sw, Casio for fashion.
Some people put Sony in the first tier, my only complaint with sony is the
memory stick, I think I'm an SD snob. |

in terms of quality (especially in point and shoots, sony would be first tier ...
but i agree with you about their stupid proprietary memory sticks. the entire planet uses universal CF or SD cards ... sony just have to be dumb and use their own technology.
but that has always been sony's failing ... they try and promote proprietary technology and it always fails. what's that thing called for the psp?? UMD? those things are completely useless unless you own a psp.
worst ... idea ... ever. |

I second the backing for Panasonic, like many other manufactures out there they are an electronics company that is making cameras but they have picked up some really good lenses along the way. Most if not all of the current Panasonic lineup is using Leica lenses which are renowned for quality. I have some experience with these cameras too, they are very high end especially the "slr like" cameras. They are also remarkably light, about half the weight of similar camera though they are the same size.
That said if you want a camera for sheer quality of images.
Nikon or Canon can't be beat. |
