I've been a pro boxer here in Korea for a couple of years, and I've had more difficulties with red tape as a fighter than I EVER had as an ESL teacher.
Now that I've "learned the ropes", so to speak, I'd like to offer advice and guidance to any former amateur boxers that may be considering turning pro, here in Korea.
If you're interested in getting a pro fight, or just getting licensed as a pro fighter, please msg me. |

I don't box much, but your story sounds interesting. Care to share any interesting stories?
Also, how would you rate Koreans as boxers overall? Just curious. |

Hey Joe (isn't that a song?)
Just wondering, how many times have you been punched in the Ring? |

Lots of interesting stories! These last few years have been pretty cool for me. Fought live on MBC three times, and after one of the wins, I proposed to my wife (on live TV!). I've also had a couple of little documentaries done on me ("foreigner fighting in Korea"-type stuff).
I'm 5-0 now, but a couple of injuries have kept me out of the ring for awhile. While I'm recuperating, I'm looking to help any other foreigners that may be thinking of turning pro.
If you have amateur experience, and would like to get licensed as a pro, please feel free to contact me.
Apparently on this site there's a 25-post minimum for people to send and receive pm's? Until then, please post on this thread or pm me.
Thank you!

That would be Choi Yo-sam. I met him last summer at a fight card. A great guy. It's a real tragedy... |

Excellent stuff... what weight division are you at? I'm assuming you are fighting at a heavier weight than most Koreans would fight at, is the red tape due to stringent medicals or not being able to get matches with local opposition? (due to any weight disparity)
(Edit: Just read your website! Cheers!)
I was a so-soish amateur heavyweight/super heavyweight (after a pie binge usually ) I have thought about the idea of turning pro with Stacy Goodson in the US and he said he would sponsor me while I was in the states but I need a short sight correction on both eyes for it to go anywhere. (more than likely to the canvas )
Are the purses good? Are you eligible for Korean/OPBF title fights?
Anyway, good to hear about your career, let us know the next time you are on the telly - do you box on the MBC-ESPN broadcasted cards? |

I fight at middleweight, and there's plenty of guys at that division. The red tape I mentioned? Hassles/hurdles with the licensing, and the contracts as well - both written and implied. It's all the more confusing being that everything is in another language.

Be careful. Do you know Stacy well? I don't know him personally, only by his reputation.
Have you thought about starting your career here? There are a couple of active heavyweights in Korea, but as you could imagine, they are very inexperienced (it's hard for them to get fights).
Even if you aren't going to fight here, you may want to get licensed, just to keep the door open (and perhaps be more marketable when you return home).

For some reason I doubt if you were a teacher in Canada it would be appropriate to put up a video and sing a song where you say the word Motherf*&^* several times. But here in Korea, anything goes. |

Joe, Good to see you're still in Korea. We bumped into each other in COEX a few years ago. We were only loosely acquainted back at SMU in 92-96, but it was still good to see a familiar face from home. It also turned out we had a few friends in common from the Suncheon gang in the 2001-2002 days, too. Might see you someday out and about in Bundang. Keep up the good work! |
