ohh regarding the URINE tests.. yes its very legal! I should know because I was part of a sweep years back the cops did in the club I was in..
the stopped the party and told everyone to urine in the cups..
lucky for me I was clean... not so for some of my friends..
and thats not the first time... I was even picked up outside on the street in ITAEWON and asked to for a urine test! becuase the cops said" we suspect you smoke" Im sure the cops were crazy in those days. these all happend 1999-2001 havent had any problems since like that..
ohh at the airport I was going through customs and I was flagged down and was asked if its ok they search my bag.. I was sure.. thinking shouldnt you be checking people coming in korea?? anyway he shoved some vacuum into my bag then said off you go...
yeah also those raves heard at walker hill back in the days use to be a playground for cops.. heard stories of guys being grabbed there and taken outside for tests.. never had to me.. but did happen to some people I know at PVD back in 2002... anyway.. if its in you.. thats enough to put you away.. even if you smoked in Amsterdam 2 weeks before coming here..
Its illegal for koreans to smoke abroad.. they can be arrested when they return.. its crazy!! |

A friend of mine was caught by Korean police smoking wacky tobaccy about a year ago when a "friend of a friend", who was there smoking with him and some others, ratted them out.......I guess she would rather rat him out rather than take the consequences on her own (typical Korean.....).
Back then, he was working not "in the economy", but was a child care specialist at Yongsan CYS center on South Post.......He was released into the costody of the MPs, who processed him and released him pending the trial for the drug charge......
It did go to trial last summer with him getting a USFK-appointed Korean attorney to defend him in court (because he was not a soldier and the incident happened after work, SOFA didn't protect him and Korean law had primary jurisdiction.....), the lawyer was good, he bargained with the judge to sentence my friend to time served with a 3 YEAR suspended sentence on the promise he would turn in several othe people, including the guy he bought it from (who is now in his home country of Liberia and who left when he found out the cops were looking for him)...
The attorney said he was lucky to get such a lenient judge- any other Korean judge would have thrown the book at him and give him 5-10 years for possession with the intent to use AND being under the influence of an illegal substance (which in itself is the "real" crime in Korea)....
But the story didn't end there, he lost his job with CYS and was banned permanently from entering any US government facility in Korea (I went to the USFK website and went to the MP page and found my friend's name and picture on a list of people restricted from entering post).
I think alot of young people think that if it is "ok" or it is "overlooked" when they smoke marajuana or do any other kind of "illegal substances" in their own country, that it wouldn't matter if it was deemed illegal in Korea.
But look at the current situation in which foreigners live with in Korea now, do you honestly think it is still ok to do those kinds of things?

i don't understand what you mean here ^...
if you do something in ANOTHER country, then korean law does not apply because it's out of their jurisdiction... i don't understand why koreans allow their government to get away with this absolute BS!
a question about the random urine tests: couldn't you just say that you don't have to pee? how long would the cops wait around? |

You nut. It's only legal if you agree to do it. They can't FORCE you without a warrant, and they can't arrest you because they suspect you of being a smoker.
If I were you i would have asked them to produce a warrant.

A friend of mine refused to give a urine sample out of principle they held him for 30 hours, he called the embassy and everything! finally the cops told him if you dont pee in this cup! we will make you and take a blood sample. THIS IS KOREA! NOT YOUR COUNTRY!!
the embassy said to him.. just take the test..
so he did.. he was fine.. cops asked him if you knew you were clean why didnt you take the test.. HE SAID "JUST"

True. A few years ago, I won a civil suit against a hogwan owner, even though the court showed certain lenience to him.
With something like this (a violation of human rights, undue process), i'm sure a home based national newspaper and an NGO would help out. |

I posted it here a long time ago.
They lied about the apartment. They put a bed in a small classroom within the school. There was barely enough room to walk around it.
The kitchen was shared with staff, and washroom shared with the public. The best part was they installed a shower for me to use on the balcony.
When i went to the labor board, the school made a claim that i was trying to ruin their reputation, and threatened to blacklist me from ever working in Korea again.
I then tried negotiating with the owner. I wanted out of the contract. They wanted a bribe of 500,000won in exchange for releasing me.
I told them i'd see them in court.
I left, as he had to restrain his psycho midget wife as she lunged at me in attack, flailing her arms like a windmill, while spitting out Korean obscenities.
I sued them for breach of contract, and slander. I asked the police to confiscate the CCTV video from the school that showed her lunging at me, but they wouldn't because she didn't actually hit me.
I sued for airfare and the cost of staying in a yeogwan during the time they refused to release me.
I didn't get airfare, and I only got half of the money for the yeogwan. 300,000won.
It took over a month, though, because they failed to show up for the court date. Twice! |

That's hilarious.
If they could all get away with it, they'd put us all in one of their classrooms and wouldn't install a shower on the balcony unless we complained. Ha, ha. Then if you called in sick or something they'd say, "You're a teacher! You have responsibility. Don't you care about the school's reputation?"
I'm pretty sure every last one of them would treat us like that if they could.
That's all you got out of it? 300,000? |

| I didn't read all of this thread, but I wanted to add that a guy I worked with got busted for selling 1.5 million Won worth of hash and got a fine of 1.5 million Won and is still in the country. It appears that selling/doing drugs is not really that a big of a deal. The guy had been in several fight where he had to pay blood money to the victim, got caught working on a tourist visa and then got busted selling drugs. If he didn't get jailed or deported after all that I wonder what one must do to get jailed/deported. |

It depends on how slimy you are. If you can give the police someone bigger than you, they will negotiate.
Anyone here know Fernando, from canada? He was under surveillance, caught in a deal at Outback steakhouse.
He spent 2 weeks in jail until his trial. He gave them evrey name he could, even friends. They let him go, but they deported him. |

There's been quite a few stories on here about WESTERNERS ratting their "friends" out...it's not just typical of Koreans. Plastic B's story comes to mind, as does this "Fernando" fellow. I'm sure you could do some digging through the archives and come up with a few more. |

Actually, you can easily sue the cops. A law was passed a couple of years ago that makes it so. Few Koreans know about it. |
