I think the people on this thread who knew and respected Oscar Peterson's work should be grateful regi isn't on here claiming that Peterson is alive and well, living in Pepperland with Paul McCartney. |

I can hardly believe it: an Oscar-Peterson obituary thread hijacked by a single-minded conspiracy-theorist and his war against the rest of the world.

Oscar Peterson was not only a great jazz pianist, he was a great musician and composer. I saw a film about North Ontario that he composed the score for, and it was excellent.
He was one of the last of the great old-style jazz pianists, with roots going back to the stride piano days of Willie the Lion Smith and Art Tatum. He was not a cocktail lounge pianist -- you need to listen to his music with laser like attention to catch the detail of phrasing.
His later digital CDs for Telarc didn't have the perfection of technique of his prime, but are still good.
I wonder how many people appreciated his work. But it will be around forever, so there is still time. |
