No one thinks Rudy Giuliani is going to pull any surprises in the Iowa Republican caucuses Thursday.

He will lose.

He will lose badly -- behind-Mike-Huckabee badly, behind-Mitt-Romney badly, behind-John-McCain badly, maybe even behind-Ron-Paul badly.

Giuliani knows this. But until the weekend he still played at being a player in Iowa and New Hampshire.

No more.

The man who continues to lead in most national polls of Republicans won't be anywhere near Iowa on caucus night. In a rare show of political pluck, he won't even be in the first-primary state of New Hampshire, which will vote a week from Tuesday and where his prospects are only marginally better than in the first-caucus state.

Giuliani's schedule for caucus night has him in south Florida.

Why? Giuliani is betting -- hoping, actually -- that Huckabee will prevail in Iowa. He is betting that either Romney or the surging McCain will win in New Hampshire. He is ceding South Carolina to Huckabee and Nevada to Romney.

For Giuliani, the campaign begins with with January 29 primary in Florida, where he is expecting a big win. And he hopes that it ends with the February 5 primaries and caucuses in his native New York, California, Illinois and a score of other delegate-rich states where the theory is that his big name and big bankroll may prevail over a field of by-then battered Republican foes.

It's a risk, to be sure. But it is the only strategy available to a candidate whose appeal to the Republican base voters of Iowa and New Hampshire is decidedly less than are his prospects with the more casual voters who might be attracted to the polls in the bigger states where politics plays out on a wholesale rather than retail level.

In some circles, this would be known as a Hail Mary strategy: throw up the ball, say a prayer, cross your fingers and hope, 'cause all your other options have been tried and failed.

I think this is a sign that his campaign is on life-support. If he had any chance of making a decent showing in Iowa, New Hampshire or South Carolina, he'd be in there fighting.

Stick a fork in him. He's done.

Good.

More of a chance now for the HUGE number of "undecided" caucus members to vote for ...
