Hi,

I'm thinking of checking out Japan at the end of January or February (I have time off).

First, what's the deal with ferries? I have no problem taking an overnight ferry... but do I get a room or is it just a bed in a common room? Or what does each class get you, exactly?

Also, how much are Japanese visas?

What do people think of Japan (in February)? Where should I go? I've heard Hiroshima is cool... or Osaka... what's the simplest, cheapest ferry route? Do I have to get tickets in advance?

I know there are web pages on this, but I haven't found them very helpful. Any help is appreciated.

there is a hydrofoil ferry to fukuoka that takes about 3 hours from busan. i'm not too sure about the price. i think they are about 100,000 won. there are also overnight ferries to fukuoka, but they are about the same price. you don't need to get tickets in advance for the hydrofoil, but you can book on its website. www.jrbeetle.co.jp/english/index.html

as for the visa, most people don't need a visa to travel to japan. i'm positive americans don't need a visa.

i was in fukuoka last february for a visa run and it was pretty cool. would've liked to stay for more than two days. you could get a jr railpass and travel up to hiroshima, osaka, kyoto or even tokyo.

Kangsan Travel in Busan has packages or ferry tickets only to Fukuoka. Very convenient.

Just took the overnight ferry to Osaka. Fun-ish if you have the time.

Don't trust the ferry company Panstarline. I was told (via email that took 5 days to get answered) that there wasn't much space left on the boat. When I got there they were at 1/6th capacity. Get a korean to call.

My GF and I had bunks, but with so few people on board we were able to share a room of 4 bunks, otherwise guys and girls are in separate quarters.

They had "entertainment" which was, well, korean entertainment.

The crew was a bunch of cool phillipinos.

Ferry on the way back from Fukuoka got canceled due to weather, keep that in mind. We had to stay an extra day.

If you go to Hiroshima (which was awesome) check out Miyajima Island, plan on spending a whole day there. Probably the nicest part of Japan I saw, but we were mostly in cities. And, don't believe the monkey hype, all the monkeys had "gone to the forest to eat" when we went, but that was written on a permanent sign that looked like it hadn't been moved in a while. But the deer were cool.

Japan is like a very well-organized korea. (I stole that from a co-worker)

Finally, I met a Brit who mentioned the Korean food in Japan is better than in korea, because of the quality of the meet. We did not experience this as we avoided kimchi like the plague.
