|
|
Yahoo is running a video of a news broadcast reporting that some French company has marketed a game using 9/11. The player is supposed to shoot down the planes before they fly into the WTC. A couple of family members of victims are complaining. (I don't know how to link to a video.)
This is about as low as it gets. You just don't make a game out of the deaths of 2,700 people. |

Huffdaddy has already made the point, but you could google up a variety of games based on historical battles/military incidents.

Hmmm...point being: There are more tasteless people in the world than I thought.
My view: a battle is one thing; mass murder is another. |

If anything goes, then how about a game where kids try to shoot Charley Manson's gang before they cut Sharon Tate's baby out of her stomach? That could be fun and educational. If a kid loses the game he could watch the Sharon character scream and beg for mercy for her baby while they are cutting it out. Kind of a do-it-yourself abortion lesson for kids. |

yeah, there's definitely a difference imo.
these games are all about wars, battles, and sometimes there are games where there are hostage/terrorist situations...but i've never seen a game based off of a real terrorist situation like 911.
also, games are ww2 are alright bc its been so long. 911 was not that long ago....i think it's too soon. |

You were around the USA early to mid 90s, right Yata? You should remember that the whole "serial killer chic" thing was in full swing around that time.
I remember a t-shirt with Fish's picture on it that said "Albert Fish, Ass Man". Anyone who knows about what Albert Fish did to that little girl would understand why that shirt makes the French 9-11 game look like the epitome of genteel tastefulness. |

One could argue that 9-11 wasn't mass murder, it was a new breed of warfare. Horrible, but the people who did it had reasons that made sense to them.
Our generation (speaking for most ESL teachers in Korea) hasn't seen or been threatened by a REAL war. Iraq doesn't count, either, since it wasn't a physical threat to western nations. 9-11 was awful, but considering the thousands of lives lost everyday around the world that are ignored by the American government and people, 2,900 doesn't even start to compare. Start comparing after Pearl Harbor for lives lost on a country's soil, then see where America sits in numbers. This is a devil's advocate argument, but you have to take away subjectivity as much as possible and look at stats sometimes.
Where's bin Laden, anyways? I guess the American government doesn't care much about him anymore since they don't seem to be focusing on him now. |

no, i think the lowest it gets is making a phony WAR out of the deaths of 2700 people! it's a frickin VIDEO GAME, people! lighten up!
how do you distinguish a 'battle' from 'mass murder'? are atomic attacks on civilian areas considered 'battle' or 'mass murder'? what about firebombing?
wait, i get it! it's only ok to make video games about OTHER people dying... |
