I've seen quite a few episodes of this show, and seen racers visit many countries.
Now they're in Korea and it's the funniest thing I've seen on the show.
They're getting romanized spellings of their destinations and absolutely BUTCHERING the pronunciations.
The language barrier is far worse than in any country I've seen racers visit.
I've never seen the contestants so frustrated as they try to deal with Koreans.
They keep getting the dumbfounded deer in headlights, "Uuhh???????" that we are all so fond of.
Go figure!
Oops. This is an old rerun. Still cracking me up. |

My favorite part is when one of the racers tells a taxi driver (approximately), "I shouldn't even pay you. You don't speak any English." |

I love the "taxi driver doesn't know where you want to go , so he gets into a conference with 5 other taxi drivers to discuss it" deal we've all seen before.
It's a shame that in 11 seasons The Race has only been in Korea for a total of 2 days... it's entertainment gold. |

I'd only seen the last two minutes of it as I happened to land on the channel at that time months ago. I'd love to see the full episode. Must be worth a laugh or two. |

I have the full episode on tape at home. It's pure gold. When they're dealing with the taxi driver.....it's just hilarious. "You speak English, right?" <taxi driver nods his head> He then spends the next few hours on his cell phone trying to track down a buddy who speaks English. At one point a racer gets out of the taxi and starts yelling at people walking by (along with other drivers) "Do you speak English? How about you? Do you speak English?" Funniest episode ever. |

It was a classic. I think that next time I go home, I should have this clip all ready to go. When someone asks, "What is Korea like?" I'll just pop this on and say this is my life everyday! Never boring, that's for sure. |

Has it been 11 seasons?? I've been under a rock, I suppose.
Probably they're afraid to send them back for insurance reasons. A racer might go ballistic on a blank-faced crowd on the subway.
I found it cruel they made some eat squirming octopus, but didn't offer soju.
That makes it bearable, and would have made a big difference in the competition. |

I happened upon a rerun on A&E local cable in US. Sorry. I eventually saw it was a 2003 episode. |

Season 12 started last week. It's only the very BEGINNING of the second leg and already we get a complaint:
"The Race is absolutely a shock to our systems. Clearly, I haven't had a facial or a manicure. It's even tougher than you can ever imagine."
You need to lose. I'd like to call you what is running through my head right now, but the last time I used that word, the mods deleted my post. Oh well, see you next Tuesday!
EDIT: The lesbian priests surprised me: "We are religious people, but have no illusions that God cares whether or not we win The Amazing Race." Refreshing, after the last season of Big Brother and the whole "God told me this..." and "God said I should evict this person..." blah blah blah. No one ever says "God didn't want me to win" or "The other team must have prayed harder" when they lose.
These priests seem to at least be grounded in our reality, at least some of the time.

That was one of the most depressing episodes ever!
They were in gorgeous Malaysia prior to Korea. Large plants and colorful foilage and cool people, and just tropical!
Then they fly to Korea in the wintertime. People are bundled up and looking miserable. They are in the Korean subway and people look miserable and cold. Then they go up to the DMZ in the winter. Actually everything they did just made you feel depressed to have spent so many years here of your life.
Uggh. Depressing episode for long-termers in Korea. |

Leg 10 (Malaysia → South Korea)
* Sandakan (Puu Jih Shih Temple) @
* Flight: Kota Kinabalu, Sabah (Kota Kinabalu Airport) to Incheon, South Korea Flag of South Korea (Incheon International Airport)
* Seoul (Namsan Park)
* Sundam Valley >Roadblock (Ice Swimming)<
* Seoul (Subway Station 228) >Detour (Strong Hands or Strong Stomach)<
* Seoul (Gyeongbokgung Palace) >Pit Stop (leg 10)<
@ = Teams must search through thousands of tiny Buddha figurines for the one with their names on it. Behind the figurine would be a key to a rattan bag holding their next clue.
The Detour choices in this leg were Strong Hands or Strong Stomach. In Strong Hands, teams had to go to a local Tae Kwon Do school and break three boards before being receiving their clue. In Strong Stomach, teams had to go to a restaurant where they had order and eat a Korean delicacy. What they didn't know until it was given to them is that the delicacy was a large bowl of live octopuses. The Roadblock was to plunge into the icy river and swim under the ice to an exit hole. |

If anyone is watching the second season of Amazing Race Asia, they went to Tokyo in episode 5 then over to Busan in episode 6 (latest episode). The taxi driver portion of the show is still entertainment gold. None of them know where they are going, made even worse with the butchering of the names.
종로 (spelled Jongro) gets pronounced like "Jown-grow". If the romanization was better, say change the r to an n, they would do much better.
Isn't "Beomeosa Temple" pronounced 버머사? Host says 비오미오사.
Language barrier is fun. |
