Anyone apply for this (I129-F) for their fiancee while in Korea? I'm interested to know how long the process took to get the visa for your fiancee and any tips you would give.

| I did that about ten years ago. It took six months to process the fiance visa. I should mention that I applied right after I left Korea to go home. |

Sorry I should've posted more details in the op. I'm applying for an American fiancee visa (I-129f) for my Korean girlfriend. I'll be applying while I'm in Korea.
I talked to an immigration guy in Korea yesterday and he said it will take about a year!  So I was hoping to get more info from people who applied for this visa while in Korea and any advice, tips they could give me--as well as how long it took them to get their visas.

Why don't you get married here and then apply for the K3? That way you can both go back to the States together when she's approved?
I was recently doing a tons of research on visas and it seemed like (emphasis: seemed) it was hard to get a K1 while the supporting spouse was out of the country.
I know the K3 often takes more time than the K1, especially when the country doesn't do direct consular filing (and as far as I know, So Kor is one of the countries that doesn't), but at least you can stay with her here the whole time. |

Korea does direct consular filing for spouse visas, but I don't know about fiancee visas.
If you do DCF for a spouse, it's not a K3, its CR1 or IR1 depending on how long you've been married. Same thing, different name. I filed for my husband August 9th and he was approved December 14. Much faster. |

Thanks for the info. I swear, everything I've read said they didn't do DCF, but things change. Really good to know. |

| www.visajourney.com will really help you with either the k1 or k3 visa. they have a guide with tips and suggestions, sample forms, templates you can use, etc. Register on the site and browse through their message boards if you have any questions regarding specifics. Unfortunately there isn't a lot of information regarding Korea on there, and I never found the people at the US embassy too helpful over the phone. |

In those days, Korea didn't have high speed internet. Most people didn't own a computer, so you had to go to about one of 20 internet cafes in Seoul. I mention this because there wasn't a lot of information on the internet about getting married. My contract was cut short by the International Monetary Fund crisis, so I decided to go home and apply from there right after I got a job. The whole process took exactly six months from the day I applied to the day I got the approval form in the mail. It was a lot of fun waiting to see if they approved it...but satisfying to know that I had done things the right way.
Friend of mine is an engineer, was working in Korea for about 2-3 years. His then gf went to visit him on a tourist visa and overstayed. He had loads of cash, so he hired a lawyer. Never had to do anything, the attorney did everything for him. She never even had to stand in line at INS, not once. I had to go down to INS with my wife for just about everything, hours and hours of lines and runarounds. But after three years, she finally got the green card. A lot of Koreans prefer keeping the perm residence in the US rather than go full on citizen because they can always come back to Korea when they want to. I'm glad she waited on the citizenship, because I'm now enjoying the benefits of the F visa in Korea...I wouldn't have this opportunity if she had applied for US citizenship as soon as she was eligible... My wife will apply for citizenship when we move back to the states in 2011. |
