Ok, I happened to get a lead on a gig teaching adults at a PR company just down the street from my school. I'd start in January, provided the rest of the staff (who I meet next week) approves of me. I teach Kindy now, and my curren school is OK with me doing the other gig on my own time.
My school said to just "go ahead and do it", but I insisted that I heard it's the law I need to get the OK from immigration, and present immigration with a letter from my primary school, stating that it's all kosher.
They have agreed to write a letter to immigration for me, but we're all going to check in how to proceed.
Has anyone ever been through this before? I'm really excited, because it's a great opportunity, and my pay will jump another 1.5 million for just 9 more class hours a week. Also, it would be just before and soon after I finish work at my primary school.
Is there a number to call for immigration in such a matter, or should I just head down to Omogkyo? What are the Saturday hours?
Thanks! |

Hi Derrek,
Here's what I got off the Immigration website:
Korean Immigration wrote: |
When a foreigner desires to change or add working places under his/her present status of sojourn, he/she must apply for and obtain permission to do so in advance. For example, this permission is required when an English teacher wishes to teach English at a different language institute from the one originally designated, or desires to teach English not only at a language institute originally designated but also at a different language institute under the same status of sojourn |
What you need is to fill in the Application for Alteration or Addition of Employment place form, downloadable from the Immigration website as a PDF.
I don't know how much it costs - maybe 30,000?
Edit: Look here for contact numbers. |

I think you might have problems here in that the other place isn't an educational institution, I'm guessing it's just a company office?
My school wanted to 'hire' me out to another school, and contacted immigration about it. Apparently the other school wasn't even an official hagwon as it didn't have a proper business licence (the director was running it from her own home) and she got into a bit of trouble for that. She's had to buy premises and apply properly now.
But I digress... immigration said that because it wasn't a properly licenced educational institute they wouldn't grant permission to work there on the E-2.
The immigration wording that waterbaby posted also suggests "language institute".
So I'm not sure... anyone else? |

It is being handled through a business which calls itself an "English Institute."
I interviewed with this place once before, but the hours weren't enough for me to merit the travel. The guy remembered me, where I am teaching now, and also that I have extensive experience in the area he needs.
So he called me back and said, "Hey, I've got something..." I told him I wouldn't do it unless I could do it legally. He said that's fine.
Thanks for your info. I guess all I can do is try. |
