Quick question:
If none of you read the posts on Daveseslcafe, would your impression of Korea be better or worse?
I say this because most of my grievences against Korea and Koreans are primarily based on things I read on this board.
Sure I've had some bad personal experiences. Some.
But for the most part my time here has been fatastic and I'll always have a speciel place in my heart for this country. |

When I was a newbie, I had a couple of weeks where the content or other posters got under my skin. Then it passed.
I usually skip over everyone's sob or angry stories and focus on real problems, whether they are Korean immigration issues that should piss me off, or whether it's someone's honest problem that I may be able to help out with by giving advice.
Personally, I'd rather read about people's stories and get news about living and working in Korea, even if it pisses me off sometimes. I like being informed. It's kind of like politics, you should still pay attention even when Bush is pissing the country away. |

some topics really wind me up here, ex. reading yet another post on the new E-2 regs. but overall, i'm glad that i read dave's. most of the problems that i have at my PS are shared by other posters here (most of my friends are at hagwons), so it's nice knowing that other people are going through the exact same crap |

Dave's serves a good purpose. Lots of information about the various things. It is good to know that your boss isn't the only screwed up one in the world and it isn't just you who is being subjected to the oddities.
However, reading Dave's does inject a great deal of negativity into the experience of living here. You have to be very selective in whose posts you read to avoid the worst of it. |

| If it wasn't for Dave's I would have taken the first BS job offered to me and I'm sure my life would have been miserable split shifted, working until 10PM in the middle of nowhere. Enough said. |

| Dave's is both a blessing and a curse to the newbie. There's a lot of good info, but there's also a sizable group of posters with an axe to grind against the general population of Korea that turned me off from posting in the months leading up to my arrival should I develop stereotypes about a people I'd never had any contact with. |

Dave's Cafe posters p!ss me off a lot.
Especially the know it alls who come on swinging their club of knowledge around then quoting a wiki article to back themselves up.
90% of the people on here are knobbers or turn into knobbers after a while. |

Dave's isn't the only game in town, BTW.
I would be reading a different forum and I probably would not know as much as I do know. But I would see a broader perspective. |

to be honest I find myself getting more negitive as I continue to read.
however I am not really sure if the country is getting me down so i find solace here... or if the negitivity here is making my experience worse.. |

I use wiki articles when they have legit citations and links to real research....nothing wrong with that. It's a great starting point, quick, easy, and usually good enough for the level of discussion on this board. |

Far too much seriousness and back slapping c.ock pulling for my liking |
Sorry to hear that you hate know-it-alls who post wikipedia articles.

My opinion of Korea is worsened considerably by Daves, as is my opinion of the folks who come to work here. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if many of the douchebags I've met in real life post on here. |

My first 3 years here (2000 ~ 2003 was without Daves)...
apparently that was good - becase apparently back then there were a LOT of psycho's on this board...
(not like the simple psycho's we have now - apparently back then the psychos using this board were dangerous)....
I joined in 2003 (during my 4th year here) and using Daves has helped a lot - for buying/selling things...
computer/tech related problems...
and for sharing information on the general discussion...
NOW 7 years here - and I have never been involved in an accident/ or altercation or fight with any Korean people (or other foreigners)...
and when I read all those stories I just wish THOSE people would go home... they are obviously half-the-reason for the fight/altercation...
However.. sometimes when I read others stories about Korean xenophobia, the way Koreans despise us etc etc - I KNOW its true and I just feel sorry for those people... (however - its all happened to all of us) -
so reading Daves is just a convenience for finding and sharing info...
although there are some annoying posters on here - (such as myself)...

| My impression of Korea is worse but Dave's helped me get a good job and let me rant about things like Psycho Korean Men and crazy MIL. I don't feel so alone |
