So I learned I have a new talent (I use that term loosely)...
I can drink a bottle of soju in one go. This is a really fun party trick. Koreans will stare open mouthed, and say "This is unbelievable!" If you are with Korean friends, as soon as you announce your intention, they will grab your arm and PLEAD with you not to try it, as you will undoubtedly drink yourself to death in one glorious chug.
Its also fun to go from sober to drunk in about 15 minutes, for 2000 won, which is what happens. When you get drunk that fast, you feel like you're sliding sideways off a cliff. Pretty fun.
The first time I did it, I exhaled a little through my nose at about the 2/3rds mark...big mistake. The soju fumes go into your nose and the stuff you've already imbibed tries to make a quick break for it. So the second time I didn't exhale at all until the bottle was gone and I was fine.
Its funny to see how some Koreans connect drinking tolerance with masculinity, as I get a lot of slaps on the back and comments like "Wow, you're tough!" and "You're a REAL man!" (that last one I thought was hilarious. I ran right out and got a battleship tattooed on my chest)
So now they call me...the soju poju. Awww, yeahhh. That would make for a good screen name. Hey mods, can you change my screen name to Soju Poju? |

I once saw a vodka drinking competition. One (poor) idiot decided to impress everyone by drink half a bottle of vodka in one go. He died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital (heart failure). Soju is not as strong as vodka and the amount being talked about here is smaller (and Im the last person to comment on others drink since I drink more than most and in Korea thats saying a lot) but I would strong recommend against doing that in the future. You may feel fine for now but you actually severely damaging yourself. |

On the topic of soju......
Has anyone else noticed the "soju" effect of going from feeling totally fine to black-out hammered?
I, granted, do also drink more than I should and have been for a while.
However, I've never noticed this with any other booze.
And the damn guilt-ridden, gut-wrenching headaches are also the worst I've ever experienced, even drinking a comparable amount of other types of liquors. The beer doesn't seem to be much better. A few bottles of (s)HITE or (C)ass make me utterly useless the next day.
Regardless, I agree with the above. Not a good idea. Go the korean way and do many small shots, it only takes about 10 minutes more than your idea.
Vile soju........ |

Man, there's a lot of potentially great names for bands on the boards today. I would gladly pay $20 to see a show by a band called

Although going by the origins of the name, I don't think I'd want to stand too near them. And I'd imagine they aren't likely to be a long-lived troupe. |

soju is definitely not a safe drink. I have and can drink a fifth of vodka or scotch over the course of an evening and get drunk but not stupid drunk. BUT, three or four bottles of soju and I'm retarded and the illness afterward. Jesus christ, that stuff is not safe..... |

Yeah, you know, I've never had a hangover from soju, and never puked or been sick. Although, I take precautionary measures, namely, I drink 500ml of water (at least) before I go to bed, and the next day, I'm always fine.
In regards to whether or not I'm damaging myself, let's do the math:
A 350 ml bottle of soju at 19.5% (which Cham I Sul, my brand of choice, contains) contains 68ml of pure alcohol. Absolut vodka is 40% alcohol, so the soju is equivalent to just a little less than 4 shots. That's like downing two Long Island Ice Teas, to give the c0cktail drinkers a comparison. Not particularly wrecking to the body.
Soju has a taste that a lot of people don't like, and so they equate that with it being really strong. Its just a bit stiffer than a glass of red wine, actually.
So "one glorious chug" won't hurt you unless you're a lightweight, and plenty of people are, so if you're one of them, drink responsibly. Leave the irresponsible drinking to The Soju Poju.

Do this around lots of Korean girls. Had a bartender babe who was indifferent to me for 3 months frequenting the place regularly. Went out with my Korean buddies, stood up, made a show of chugging the bottle of Soju, and I was in a Love Motel with the bartender lass several hours later. She jsut automatically started swooning over me. It was like Harry Potter put some magic love spell on her, cuz it was like flipping on a lightswitch. Cool, but strange I was getting laid because I chugged soju. |

Yep, go from 'yea, feelin like I'm gettin my swerve on' to 'Oh hell no, here comes trouble!' in an instant. My K-gf won't get drunk on soju with me, she claims that she gets stupidly retarded and sometimes violent. |

Well, Im glad you added the last bit.
What would a bottle of soju be? Six std. drinks?
How much alcohol is lethal?
The lethal dose of alcohol is clinically defined as the amount that would kill half the population. Most authorities place this dose at about .40%, or about five times the legal limit in New Mexico. However, there are many cases in which death occurred from alcohol poisoning at much lower, and in some cases, higher levels. For a 120 lb. man or woman drinking very quickly, it would only take about 9-10 drinks in an hour to reach the lethal level.
http://www.unm.edu/~shc1/htalcoholpoison.html
Here is a cool calculator people can use to calculate their blood alcohol level:
http://www.1800duilaws.com/forms/bac.asp
n.b.
1 Fluid Ounce = 29.5735295625 mil
1 lb = 453.59237 g (or 0.4536 kg)
And here is a table which tells you when you die.

Next time, try a soju enema. Your liver won't have to filter out any of the good stuff...and well, it goes straight into your bloodstream - bypassing the stomach/food completely.
Good stuff. |
