THis was in today's paper. But it shouldn't surprise anyone. Copyright and intellectual property violations are a national pasttime here.

I remember at my uni in Canada a PHD graduate had his degree taken back by the university. He had plagiarized almost an entire article from an academic journal, turned it into a chapter of his thesis, and gave zero citation to the original author's research.

What's with these people. This sort of scam culture is everywhere here, from that clone fraud doctor to academia it goes on and on.

But let's check whitey's credentials five times a year.

You obviously aren't from Alberta. Former Premier Ralph Klein, while in office, decided to get a education, so he started going to college. He was caught plagiarising, and nothing was done about it.

You should see my students when I tell them to write an essay paper. I can google what they write and find it, and it comes from the weirdest places...like Chinese internet forums. Really weird. Wonder how many of their, ahem, "sources" can't even be found using the "English" google search.

Good thing is they'll be going to the States for Uni - wonder how many will get caught and fail a few classes?

No, I'm indifferent to him. He is a social conservative and I'm not. However, the man made a minor citation mistake but did not plagiarize. The word plagiarize has a meaning, a criteria, and what he did does not fit.

I'd normally let it slide, but you tried to use that non-event as evidence of equal Korean and Canada rates of plagiarism.

I have the suspicion some of the rich Korean students just hire a professional ghost writer for their college papers. I wouldn't be surprised if they keep hiring pros when they go into the professional world.

Having been an editor, I know something about writing skills and styles. When you see something that is just too good, too smooth, from a job applicant with limited experience, I have learned to be suspicious. Then when you see the person's real work, it can be appalling.

When you see something from someone with limited English skills that is written like a pro, it probably is.

All it takes is money.

Speaking of money, JFK's "Profiles in Courage" was ghost written. Should have given the Pulitzer to the ghost.

But let the record show that I know a Korean who is a professor at an American college who writes beautifully in English, and it is definitely his own work. He is a real scholar and a gentleman.

So let's not over-generalize.

MLK apparently plagiarized large portions of his PhD thesis at BU. He got caught, but was allowed to retain the degree with a footnote on his transcripts about academic dishonesty.

There have been many, many such events in history. Elizabeth Nickson, one of my favorite right-wing Canadian commentators was caught plagiarizing in the National Post.

can someone explain to me what the difference is between trying to "save face" and trying to not get "embarrassed" or "ruin your reputation" when you are caught lying?

Cuz I don't think there's any mysterious face to be saved here, I think its just reputation and mood. Lets consider the following sentences:

I'm not going to tell my girlfriend that I'm banging two other chicks to "avoid embarrassment" and "maintain my reputation."

I'm not going to tell my girlfriend that I'm banging two other chicks to "save face."

Is there any difference?

"Saving face" also refers to such masochistic behaviour as: your girlfriend finds you cheating with two other women and denies it to the world. Or your boyfriend etc.
