Is it unreasonable to ask for cash instead of the airticket given at the end of a contract? I'm not sure when I want to return home and via any countries, plus I may just stay in Korea until my next job starts.
Are schools supposed to give you cash instead if you don't need a ticket home? |

bulgogi boy...you will have to leave Korea anyway.
When your visa expires (unless the school simply extends it) you have a week (or less maybe) to leave the country.
If you want to stay here you will have to do a "visa-run".
Short in and out to japan and comeback on a tourist visa.
Then you might have to do another "visa-run" when your new job starts...
As for giving you "cash"...I think not. |

No reason the boss cant give you the cash equivalent. Its happened for me & others I know.
But understand it constitutes a favor, not a right. Have you had a friendly working relationship? Have you done your boss any favors? No harm in asking him anyway. |

Thanks for the advice Homer...Where you taking a break from cyber porn?
I have already done a couple of "Visa Runs" both here and in Thailand. When I talk about staying in Korea I was taking into account any necessary "Visa Runs". The immigration office told me I can get a month's extension if I apply 2 weeks before my visa expires, although this will only be allowed for personal travel and not work. My alien card expires on February 7th so an extra month or so will carry me through to the start of the university year when I can pop to Japan for a "Visa Run". |

My boss is a decent guy but he's Korean so his thinking is a little F$%^ed up sometimes(similiar to most other nationalities). We got on great for the first 7/8 months or so but his attitude changed when I told him I only wanted to stay for one year. He's incredibly helpful at times and frustratingly stubborn and awkward at other times. I could see him refusing to pay my return ticket to Thailand(for visa run and nookie) because it is only supposed to be a one-way ticket, and instead opting to buy me a one-way ticket to the UK (my native country where I don't want to go back to yet) even if it costs him twice as much!!
He's told me he won't give me money but he's still going to have to spend it either way, ticket or cash, so what difference does it make? |
