|

I need a reference point.
I have been offered an employment opportunity teaching English, proof reading documents and providing electronic technical support.
They have offered me 3,000,000 won per month for a 40 hour week.
There is no medical, pension, bonus or accommodation.
I think I would only get public holidays off as well.
I need to counter offer but I need to back it up some how, can anyone help me out with some salary figures of a similar position.
What does a 35 year old Korean Man/Women graduate with 10+ work experience year get per month for a salary?
Personally I think there offer is on the light side what are your thoughts or comments. |

Why compare yourself to Koreans?
They don't have your white face.... |

A job in Seoul that pays 2,200,000 or so with all benefits is actually worth about 3,000,000. Think about this:
Housing: 400,000
Pension: 80,000
Health: 30,000
Severance pay: roughly 180,000 a month
Plane ticket: roughly 70,000 a month
Need I go on?
I may accept it if really hated teaching and wasn't planning on staying a year. But a 40 hour week is a bit long. I bet it doesn't include your lunch time, making it a 9 hour day. |

Wouldn't touch it for less than 5 million/month AND they'd have to kick for health insurance AND a bonus.
Sound like they are trying to pick up a foreigner on the cheap. The job you are describing is 'part time' in Korea-speak, and, if you have experience, not what you should be looking for. Never be afraid to just walk away. |

This year, 2008, Korean law dictates 14 (15??) days paid vacation over and above legal holidays. Korean law also dictates, pension, health insurance...
So if this job is inside the country, you know one thing about them...they aren't worried about breaking the law of their own country. |

I'd have to agree with a previous poster. They are offering VERY low rates considering the work you would be putting in. On a contract, proofreading a book (say 200 pages) in detail could entail 2-5M won depending on the person including corrections. Rewriting a book would require a lot more time & attention to detail. Remember that ANY mistakes that are overlooked will result in you being blamed.
5 million won MINIMUM a month for that work would be proper. The hours are also very high for that type of work. They ARE looking for someone on the cheap. Considering the value of lost bonus, airfare & housing the reality is more like they are offering in the areas of around 2.0 million a month.
I would strongly pass up on this one.

After looking through the job description I will be carrying out the following tasks.
1. Teaching two Business Classes to 100+ people each morning and afternoon
2. Accessing the English ability of each of the class attendees
3. Making custom English language programs for the attendees of the class
4. Proof reading and writing company documentation
5. As I have a electronic back ground, provide technical support to this companies overseas customers
6. Assisting the overseas sales department in making new leads and potential sales.
7. This is my favourite do what you manager asks that is reasonable
I can imagine that my day will be filled up.
I expect that this will be a pressured job as they questioned me why I needed preparation time for the business classes.
I think they will make sure every minute of my day is used. |

That in itself is worth 3M per month

Assessing 200 people is no joke. What is the time frame.

3. Making custom English language programs for the attendees of the class |
I easily take one hour of prep per hour of teaching, customizing lesson plans is no easy feat.

4. Proof reading and writing company documentation |
Another job just in itself, with some people goong for 50k per hour on independant basis. If not more if the language is highly specialized.

Call center agent on top of teaching, prepping and verifying documents?
Don't plan on having a social life.

This is a full time job just by itself. Creating leads is a very very time intensive job and requires you to call and pull strings on everyone you know.

The total of the above is completely unreasonable.

3.000.000 is certainly below the mark
People can earn 3M being a foreigner working 20 hours per week, and no additional strings attached.
3M ofcourse includes all non financial benefits included.
Depending on your age, I would ask for at least the double and a middle management position. |
