I got my record check at my local police department in Illinois, and I'll be damned if it doesn't show me as being arrested 3x's. The first one was for going 50 mph in a 30, the second one for 65 in a 50 and the third for squealing my tires. Clearly these are all traffic violations, but they also state that I was "arrested" for each of the incidents. So my question is am I totally screwed for my visa? Are Koreans going to see the word arrested and deny me entry? I don't mean to go into Chicken Little mode here, but reading other stories of how fickle immigration can be, I'm sweating it a bit...

Ha! I actually have been arrested three times. For all you fans out there, that would be for public intoxication.....sheeit, completely normal in Korea.....d.u.i, which I only blew a 2.73 for, just suspicion.....and aggravated armed robbery of a clergyman.

Well, speeding is evil. There's no excuse for that. Robbing a clergyman though, you should get a medal for that, bro.

When I was 17 I was involved in an armed robbery of a convenience store and my friend shot the clerk, we left with just over 200 bucks bought an 8 ball got super high and then were arrested the next day. My friend dropped his wallet at the store that's how they found us.

Look for someone with a similar name, find their details on facebook or something, use their clean sheet. That's how I got my passport too!

how far back do the criminal checks go? i have some stuff that's over 10 years old (failure to do community service after writing a bad check), plus the occasional speeding ticket. am i going to have a tough time trying to get another contract?

What I've heard is that in the U.S., only the government has the right to access someone's arrest record. The thing is, false arrests occur all the time, but CONVICTION is the main thing.

I'd think a criminal record would not contain an arrest record, but correct me if I am wrong.

1. when i apply for my next visa, does the fact that i can say that i lived and worked in korea for a year incident-free help me any at all if i have some minor infractions (moving violations and a couple of bad checks almost 15 years old)?

2. is the person who interviews me at the consulate the same person who decides whether or not to reject me based on criminal record?

The new rules aren't just going to go away. Korea will save face on the teacher shortage by letting teachers from more countries in.

Apply for a records check from another location... FBI or State or whatever.

My advice is don't worry about those traffic violations.

My understanding - based on information posted on threads in the "Jobs" forum - is that Korean Immigration is only concerned with arrests relating to drugs, sexual abuse, or violence.

They can also ban you if you have served time in prison for any offense.

I also had become concerned about a possible zero-tolerance for arrests after that "rejected" thread first appeared.

However, it was clarified that Korean Immigration had not rejected the E-2 visa application - they approved it even though there were two arrests for burglary (with no convictions)

Although his particular school reneged on hiring him for whatever reason, he could still apply for and get another job in Korea.
