Little punks. Very Happy

I have a rule that if they can't ask me in a grammatically correct sentence, they don't get no frickin game. Also, they're not allowed to call me "teacher". I'm a person, I have a name.

The really irritating thing is that I kill myself to come up with new and interesting games to play so they won't get bored, but they're like ravenous beasts...always wanting more...

Erlyn,
That is so true. If the kids can't ask if they can play a game correctly, then the time should be used to teach them better English. Laughing
Also, too many games = break time from English, let's all converse in Korean. Rolling Eyes

I think you need to clean out your ears. The kids are saying, "Teacher's lame."

What about:

Oh that's spicy, can you eat spicy food? Yeah right. Bland is more like it. Try Mexico, India, Thailand, etc...

Oh you can use chopsticks! (But you lot (koreans) can't use a fork or spoon yet...)

'Do you eat Korean food?' (What else are you going to eat every day on a regular basis, Indonesian food? British pub grub?)

Duh..........

Silly Alvin, put down that ddeokboki and march yourself over to your nearest McDonald's and get yourself the Big Mac you know you have for lunch every single day of the week.

I'd love to do this one day, tell the class I eat nothing but fast food here:

Breakfast: Ms Donald's apple pie. Coffee
Lunch: KFC with biscuit and cole slaw, cola
Dinner: Pizza and cola

And talking of fast food, Katy, of all those types of places, that 'originally from Japan' Lotteria has to have the best quality burgers, buns, etc... Mmmm, certainly beats Mac, KFC, etc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Canadian co-worker used to get really irritated by learners food perceptions of us, and I couldn't resist telling my learners that all we ever eat is fast food.......

Ah, but these get the same response from me every time: Please take out your notebook and a pencil.... After that they get to write some annoyingly long sentence about showing respect for their teacher 10-20 times depending on the level of disrespect they have shown. I still hear them, but not as much as I used to.

As for "Teacherrrrrr....... GAME!", I had one student who was sincerely trying to make a complete sentence asking me if we could play a game, but he kept screwing up the verb constructions. All I could bring myself to do was answer him literally every single time. This went on for a week before I taught him how to do it right. The result:

Q: "Teacher... did you play the game?"
A: "Well, not today, but I have in the past!"

Q: "Teacher... are we playing the game?"
A: "I don't think so!"

Q: "Teacher... would we play the game?"
A: "Under certain circumstances we might!"

Q: "Teacher... will we play the game?"
A: "Which game?"

He now asks me "Teacher... will we play a game?", but he's the only one who uses a complete sentence. *sigh*

You do know that in Korean, when they call someone "teacher" it is a sign of respect, right?

You might have a name, but they are just translating a sign of respect they show all "teachers" into YOUR language. I would rather have my students call me "teacher" than sunsangnim or sensei etc. It at least shows they are making an effort in English.

Lastly do your students call you Mr. XXXX or do they call you by your first name? Now if they call you by your first name, why do you allow that? It wouldn't wash back in whatever country you can from. Oh maybe it is a cultural thing - every hawgwon I've been at they just use the first name of the teacher...

/rant off tired of people commenting on stuff they don't understand

Or:

Book NO!

Where is it?

Book NO?

Where?

Book NO! Book NO!

English No!

Finally some other kid will translate for the "book no" student, then of course the genius usually says this,

Teacher, book home.

Why?

I'm a big meanie.

If I hear 'teacher, game' I make them do jumping jacks.

However if they are good on friday I get the junior monopoly set out with some of my classes and we play in english only. If I hear korean I fine the offender/s $1.

Some more of my favorites:

"Teacher, Icecream!" (wonderful having a Baskin Robbins in the building to remind them everyday that one day I was silly enough to buy them icecream, thinking that they wouldn't then ask everyday)

"Teacher, bathroom" (said by the kid rocking from side to side holding his crotch two minutes into the start of class)

"Teacher, pencil" (with the pencil in one hand and the other clenched into a fist making round circular movements as if sharpening it)

"Teacher, me garbage" (You can throw out your "Ramen" package after class)

"Me...homework...yes" (but at home)

JAJINGNAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Indeed

I never had a problem with it. Kids are kids, and it isn't too hard to come up with something that's both educational and entertaining. I switched from adults to kids because too many adults had a "if it's fun then it can't be learning" mindset that became very tedious.
When the 'Teacher, game!' thing got to be a bit much I used to say "Okay, let's play my favorite game! It's called the 'pop-quiz' game!" Wink

Don't forget that 'teacher' is the translation of Sonsaengnim, which is an honorific- don't be too hard on the dear little buggers for using it, it's what they've been taught is the correct way to address a teacher.
