Alright, that's a good answer to the fashionable, Richard Gere Free Tibet types.
But what about those of us who think that the CCP is not the best organ of gov't for Tibet?
Seriously, the Dalai Lama has moderated his stance. He no longer thinks Tibet should be sovereign, but it should be free. By free he means it should have autonomy. Its almost 60 years since China took over Tibet and there is still an occupation regime. At a certain point, China needs to justify its administration of Tibet on substantive grounds. China, it seems to me, has not done so.
And yes, the standards for China are higher than the theocratic regime of the Lamas. That is because China is an emerging world power with substantial economic clout and scientific advancement. |

I think any part of china that could enjoy democracy and religious freedom (including the freedom from religion) would be a good thing. And I don't think China is going to be able to maintain their single party rule for much longer.
Anyway, any talk about freeing Tibet should be accompanied by concrete plans for how Tibet would become a democracy itself. |
