as to the OP, yes, many of us who have worked with radiation (or do so now) agree there is no safe dose - and make adjustments accordingly

personally i know of one prof who would make every excuse in the book not to let his dentist take regular xrays of his teeth for instance

there are other studies that show chromosomal damage does occur in much lower doses than originally believed when the organism is exposed over extended periods of time.

On the other hand, the damage to your teeth by undetected decay is both real and certain.

Thousands of people die every year due to coal/oil emissions. It's just as hard to get certain figures on this than it is in the case of the much fewer people effected by nuclear accidents. Noone cares though, as the deaths are always spread out in time and space.

Chernobel isn't a good example to use against the nuclear industry in a practical sense. It was a bad design, badly run. It's like trying to ban cars because the Ford Pinto would explode.

I agree on 'the no safe dose' however, at least intuitively. I haven't read enough research to be sure, but yes it seems that any one of the many small exposures to radiation or pollution could be the one that kills you. But since the number of people dying from confirmed radiation damage is rather small, I tend to put this risk somewhat below many other risks of life. Like traffic fumes, smoky PC rooms and poor diet.

Chernobyl has been vastly exagerated by the knee jerk anti-nuclear crowd, like FOCCUS. You will notice I said "proven" deaths. Others are speculative.

How many of the cancers and birth defects would there have been in any event. The real answer is that, no one knows.

In Japan there are still people dieing of cancer - 60 years later - whose deaths are attributed to radiation from the bombs. The supposition that the bombs "caused" the cancers 60 years later is ludicrous. People all over the world get cancer and die, that is part of life.

I have watched documentaries on Chernobyl of the terrible birth defects and cancers. I have also seen some of perfectly normal people who simply stayed, of animals that are perfectly normal and plants showing no effects at all.

Come of the silly scare tactics!

The bull roar of global warming is the same kind of scare them and the money to "change our ways" will flow to the right causes.

So Counterpunch plucked the nuclear field's last Alarmist for an interview before he died.

Let's build a nuclear power plant next to the dude's grave.

Has BB been back to argue her case? Or will she simply reintroduce this claim 4 months from now?

Have you had a good wank this morning? It might make you feel better. Since when is there a rule that I have to respond within a given time. Come to my home and change my baby's nappy, cook for my family, put my children in the bath, do my shopping, read to my 3 year old, change baby's nappy again, take the kids to the park, come home and bath the kids again, change baby's nappy, supervise the 2 of them constantly (or the 3 year old will kick the crap out of the 10 month old, the 10 month old will eat a small toy, the 3 year old will crayon the or stealthily pull up a chair against a cupboard that contains-- for what is to a 3 year old -- tempting contraband like scissors or household cleaning product) and keep giving them all the attention they will constantly demand - making, for example, a chore that should take 10 minutes often take close to an hour etc etc. Perhaps you might even shag my husband for me while you are at it? That will be great. I will have a lovely rest and will then have a bit of leisure time to sit on the forum posting and responding - something that will make a pleasant change for me.

I will come back and respond when I'm in a position to. Perhaps when both children are napping (if fortune shines and they actually fall asleep around the same time), if there are no pressing house chores to do. Perhaps today, perhaps not for a couple of days. Before that happens, perhaps you can jerk yourself off a few more times, seeing that you apparantly have so much leisure that keeping track of the activities other posters on this forum is so important to you.

If you do a search on my posting history, you'll find I have become a fairly infrequent poster. There are reasons for this. I often surf here while I'm keeping an eye on my kids, but I can't sit down and post so easily. When I try to do so, all sorts of things happen while my eye is not on the ball. So many times I've wanted to chip in on a thread and jst couldn't. So many times I've started a post, and it has had to be abandoned.

In the course of typing this (now rather long) post I have been interupted at least 5 times by a little boy who keeps tugging my arms, trying to shut down the laptop, trying to whack the keyboard with his fist, and wants me to read him Thomas the Tank Engine - and I am now cradling a grumpy baby as I type. Excuse me while I now go and breastfeed my baby and read to my boy. Excuse me for having my priorities all wrong.

Yikes. Notice how BB didn't even respond to any substance and she still laid down the law.

Remember, God made children cute so we wouldn't kill them.

If they have cheap land with a nice Dacha near Chernobyl, let me know. My retirement home on Vancouver Island just developed a leaky roof.

Very Happy

I have two young kids exactly the same ages, so believe me I know how it is. I also know how how stressful it is and so I will simply interpet this as a rant blowing off steam.

You didn't need to give us three paragraphs of detail though. Just come back when you can and respond.

From a husband and a father: Better us than him or the kids! Believe me, when your wife is locked up with under 5's all day, she just needs a target. Cut her some slack and be patient. If she starts another thread on the same topic we can always refer her to here.

It seems I did. Our friend MM2 seems to think that my whole raison d'etre is to post on this forum, and is utterly oblivious to the exhausting life of a full time carer of young children. I have not had a full night's sleep in over 10 months since my second child was born, and suffer from constant sleep deprivation. I also have very little 'me time' as I am constantly supervising small extremely active and needy dependents who must be carefully watched at all times. You think the first child is hard work, but 2 children are exponentially more difficult than one. I have to negotiate with other family members just to take an ocasional 30 minute stroll! I have been trying to read the same book for 4 weeks, and have only managed 2 chapters - in a previous life I could have finished it in a day. I have so much I'd like to say on this thread, so many points I've wanted to respond to, but so far I haven't found the window of 'me time' I need to participate the way I'd like, so I've let it slide for now. I really don't understand why MM2 has to be so snide. I found his comment bloody irritating, frankly.

Indeed. Smile However, their cuteness doesn't seem to deter them from trying to kill each other!
