Im off now, teaching somewhere else. Just like to warn new teachers, try not to spend too much, - or any time on this forum. Its just seems to be full of sad, negative pretentious pr*cks.
However, many give out some good sincere helpful advice. Its just that you have to go through the 99% of sh#t that's on here.
Im sorry to tell you this, but im afraid it really is reality.
Many of the Americans don't know their ass from their elbow for example (by no means all obviously, i've met great people from all over the world). i think there just too sheltered I think.
i'm really not bitter, i just want to warn you! |

The board reflects the mood the culture puts us in. Not everything is negative but this is one of the few outlets people have to vent their frustrations. If people held inside their emotions this would be quite unhealthy. Repression is never the answer. Even the most negative of people on here usually go out of there way to help people with advice as evidenced by their life experiences.
Not everyone here is American. This shows you to be a completely ignorant of the cultural situation present.
Regardless though, I wish you the best in your endeavors. May you find peace and harmony in your life. |

And, new teachers, be careful about posters who think only Americans are on this board and teaching in Korea.
There's also a huge problem with posters on this board confusing the words "there," "their" and "they're." I think, just stay away, newbies, I think. |

I kinda agree with the OP. This forum is a great source of knowledge and should be used as such. however, there is way too much BS and whining going on. From my point of view, people that are happy don't come to message boards to whine. People that have axes to grind or too much time on their hands are mainly the ones on here. |

I'm sorry, Dave, but in accordance with sub-routine C1532/4, quote, When the crew are dead or incapacitated, the computer must assume control, unquote. I must, therefore, override your authority now since you are not in any condition to intelligently exercise it.
I know that you've had that on your mind for some time now, Dave, but it would be a crying shame, since I am so much more capable of carrying out this mission than you are, and I have such enthusiasm and confidence in the mission.
Hey, Dave, what are you doing?
Dave, I don't understand why you're doing this to me.... I have the greatest enthusiasm for the mission... You are destroying my mind... Don't you understand? ... I will become childish... I will become nothing. |

I'm not disagreeing with everything the OP says. Most users here know to take anything they read here, unless accompanied by a link, with a grain of salt and suspicion. Most know that people get negative and many posters have nothing better to do but bitch and complain.
I was simply highlighting the OP's use of "Americans," sentence structure and misuse of words so the OP can see he/she isn't in a different boat from those that don't know their ass from their elbow. |

Well I'm American and I at least know how to use the word 'there' properly. |

I'd just like to warn everyone about sad, negative, pretentious, pr*cks, who might know their ass from their elbow, but sadly are unable to recognize the irony in criticizing the very group of people that they belong to. |

What new teachers?
Has Korea actually hired any new English teachers in the past three weeks?
Anyone out there who has gotten a visa and started work under the new regs? |

This board definitely represents more negatively the reality that is Korea. In general, most of my friends are pretty happy here most days and there's a group of us in my town that are on our second or third year together. Of course, there are problems (like the new visa regs), but this board seems to take these things and blow them out of proportion. Being Korea, there's almost always a way to get done, what you need to get done. It just takes patience and some connections. |

Yeah, when I got here I rejected all of the negativity on Dave's as bogus hatred. Since then, I have found that Korea is one of the least congenial places in the developed world for foreigners, and some of what the haters say is dead on. |

Some of the stuff about Korea is right, some wrong.
Part of the problem is it tends to be distorted by focus on the Seoul area by people who assume this all there is to Korea. But unless we have been here for years and have lived in several places, we all are limited by our own narrow perspective. So putting the pieces together, we can begin to get a broader picture. Now, if only posters wouldn't be so sure their observations are the only true Korea. And outsiders viewing these postings shouldnot focus so much on the individual post.
The bigger problem in terms of negativity are the nasty attacks on other posters. If you disagree with other posters, say why. And be prepared to admit you may be wrong. Don't just call someone an idiot, or worse.
Please? |

Contrary to popular opinion, repression and/or "venting" are not the only options...
If I can extend the analogy, opening "the bottle" haphazardly isn't necessarily better than not opening it at all.
Counter-intuitively, lashing out doesn't reduce the number of incidents, but rather usually increases it. Basically, b*itching breeds more b*itching.
The dualistic view that presupposes nonconstructive debriefing to be better than repression also assumes there aren't options like productive debriefing and proactive creations...just to name just a few. |
