Hi,
I recently started getting an annoying message every time I open windows that I may be a victim of software counterfeiting and that my copy of windows did not pass some validation test. There is also now always a little icon in the lower right corner asking me to purchase a genuine windows license. I had the computer built at yongsan and they installed windows so I am sure that it isn't a "valid copy." Is there any way without "purchasing a genuine windows license" that I can get these messages and that icon to disappear? Thanks for the help. |

You don't pay your money, you take your chances.
Format, I'm afraid. And after doing so, install a version that is either legit or one that you can trust as being genuine-ish enough to get by validation.
Another option is to never update and turn off the auto update feature. You may not like that so much, but beggars can't be choosers.
This is a nag feature that MS have implemented. They were considering limiting functionality, but they decided on a nag; and it seems to be quite effective.
I haven't a clue how to get rid of it. |

| I had auto updates turned on and, IIRC, just didn't install WGA and selected the "don't ever ask again box." |

| I had the same problem last year. Eventually, the pc shut down altogether. Back up everything to a disc NOW! I took it into Yongsan I PLaza in Seoul, & they reinstalled windows. But I lost all my lesson plans, music & photos etc. I recall it was around 45k won to repair but I'm not sure, as it was so long ago. |

Why would you lose all your lesson plans? Those should have been on a separate partition or physical hard drive and then when you reinstall you don't lose your data. |

Why would you lose all your lesson plans? Those should have been on a separate partition or physical hard drive and then when you reinstall you don't lose your data. |

Everything on 'c' drive, was wiped, when they reinstalled Windows XP. Would it have made a difference, to back up lesson plans on 'd' drive?
Fortunately, my co-teacher had asked me to download it to a UB stick, several weeks prior.

yes. Nothing would have been deleted.
I have 4 partitions on my o/s drive and anytime I reinstall I don't lose files. |

| Yeah, i've had the computer for six months but those notices and icons only started happening today when I started using windows movie maker. Maybe it installed some updates that checked the OS. Anyway thanks for the advice and input. |

First thing that happens on my machines:
Disable automatic updates. Disable BITS, Disable help and support, remote assistance, remote registry.
Join kbalertz for updates and if they are necessary or not. Updates have to cover even a single occurrence of a security lapse; they aren't really "critical" in many instances. |

or get the "right pirated copy" Don't fool around with the windows pro (regular), or corporate or any of those.. you can't update some things unless you download the genuine tool.
I just reformatted recently and am now an avid supporter of the windows pro student edition. A key is needed at the beginning, but there is no need to deal with the genuine tool.  |
