One time, my English friend came here to visit me. Her parents are Indian/Malaysian so obviously she has dark skin. Anyway, one time on the subway she was really tired, and hunched over trying to eat her giant mandu thing without making a big mess. Some Korea walked by, dropped 20 000 won in her lap and cruised off. Very weird! Did they think she was a wife of a migrant worker or something? A prostitute? She was pretty well dressed so I'm not really sure if she would have been mistaken for either of these things. |

I don't know about you, but giving away free money seems likely to attract more people than it repulses...
Perhaps something you did unwittingly really impressed him...
Perhaps your accent (I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that it's colonial) was a first for him. Perhaps he had been instructed by his proprietor to do so to any foreigner, in an effort to encourage foreigner patrons (which in some areas increases all patrons)
Or maybe he thought he was paying for your wife. |

Maybe he was told to give 50,000won to a foreigner that would be passing by to pick it up? |

I had a similar experience many years ago. I was wearing jeans that had holes in the knees, once quite fashionable I suppose. Anyway, I was waiting at a bus stop when an old woman walked up to me and handed me 10,000 won. I gave it back to her many times but she kept giving it back and finally pointed to my knees and ran off. I guess she thought I needed new jeans.
Anyway, I did not want he money to go to waste. So, I went to a Catholic Church (Songnam) that I knew that housed 3-D workers who needed a place to stay and a hot meal.
I gave the money to the man that worked there - spoke great English by the way!
He then showed me this closet full of urns. He said that often people die here in industrial accidents or car accidents etc... and they don't have enough money to send their body home. So, they have their body created and they put in an urn in this closet.
So, anyway, if you want to help migrant workers there is plenty of need! |
