Recently, the number of foreigners in Korea hit one million, and 12% of them are Americans. That's about 120,000 Americans. Since there are about 6,000 Americans on E-2 visas, and there are a further 37,000 American troops and support staff here, then who are these other 77,000 Americans? There don't seem to be that many foreign businesspeople, spouses, students, etc., here. |

I guess a fair number of them might be the families of US personnel and then their are all the gyop's living here who probably account for a large percentage of the 77,000.

On Aug. 24, the number of foreigners here reached 1 million for the first time in history, according to the Justice Ministry. That number includes foreign residents, students, tourists and illegal aliens. Among them, 104,749 people were married to Koreans, 404,051 were working here and 225,273 were illegal aliens. |
I remember reading this when it first came up but, yes, they are counting tourists. |

If only 12% of foreigners are American then about 80% has to be Canadian. |

From what I recall reading in the newspaper a few months ago, the largest group of foreigners is, by far, made up of Chinese citizens. |

When I lived in Jinhae I ran into a woman whose husband was here working as an engineer for some company or other, I forget which one. She and her two kids were with him. She said there were a couple of dozen families from the US at that company. There may be more enclaves like that scattered around. |

There are large numbers of foreigners working for multinational companies in Korea; also, the chaebol (especially Samsung and LG) employ large numbers of Western expatriates.
Check the memberships of AMCHAM and the EU Chamber of Commerce and you will be surprised by the numbers, although I think most of that 1 million are from other Asian countries and/or ethnic Koreans with other passports... |
