The last few months I've been stuck starting up classes and tutoring sessions with a good number of Korean kids/teens who have never studied with a foreigner before. Years of studying with Korean English teachers, but no waygookin. My GOD they are bad. Listening=crap. Pronunciation= COMPLETE crap. Flow=crap. True understanding of English=crap. Not bad readers and not bad at regurgitating stuff, but overall, such utter crap.

Don't forget it people. Keep your head up high. Don't put up with shiat from the media and general public. Without us, English here would be even more of a joke than it is now. Despite all these new rules, we are still a hot commodity and they need us more than we need them. (unless of course you're from the Maritimes and all your fisheries and mines are dried up.)

I've had thoughts of posting on this topic, but never got around to it...

I can often see a big difference between students in my classes who've been taught by a foreigner before, and those who haven't. So to all those hagwon teachers, public school teachers, whoever else has taught my students before - keep up the good work!

Spot on, Newbie. Also, don't forget the cultural aspect of direct contact with a foreigner (when we aren't using drugs and seducing Korean women). Once a kid gets over his fear of foreigners, they will operate much better later in life when it matters, like when they are traveling or working globally.

Right, and you turned down jobs from major firms at home to be here, eh? Try not to let it get to your head charismaman, you're nothing but a white collared bean picker.

I disagree. Koreans don't need to be fluent in English just to live average lives, which is what most want. All they need is to get a job or a promotion or a raise or whatever is a high TOEIC score, which is something a Korean teacher can prepare them for better than we can. The ones who want to travel abroad or work with foreigners and do really need us are the minority.

Hit the nail on it's head. The vast majority of Koreans simply want to pass a test, get into a chaebol, or get a raise. That's all. Ask a Korean if he would like to make real foreigner friends (without using them), hang out, and be able to converse in a natural and diverse situation; most would shutter at the thought, giggle, and run away.

Was making more back home than I did when I first started here. Now, with my F2 and a tonne of privates I'm making more than I did as a Financial Advisor back home.

Good try though. Talking out of your arse is fun, ain't it?

I can agree with what you're saying. Sure, most probably wouldn't care if we stayed or left and English isn't really important to them.

Regardless of all that, to stop being complete crap at English and sounding like fools, they do NEED us.

just a typical day for me lol its a good thing I know Korean otherwise the job would be a real struggle.

The problem is this is what the condition of English teaching is like throughout the boonies and countryside. Its desperate stuff. Not all of korea is like bundang and seoul.

I think this is true only for the Koreans who are never likely to leave Korea. Most of my friends are 유학생s and they more then long for foreign friends. There are Koreans that do fit your description but they dont account for all Korean people by any means.

I would say the strong majority of Koreans closely fit my description, let's say conservatively 70%, but I'd expect it's closer to 90%.

Wow, you must have been a really really bad Financial Advisor.... Why is it that every third person is, or was a "Financial Advisor". It seems like one of those titles banks give employees to make the employee feel more important than he/she is.
