During his campaign the president-elect promised to provide better treatment to Korea's war wounded and war dead. The incumbent president never attended the annual memorial service, sparking public criticism that he was being too considerate of North Korea.

The West Sea Battle broke out on June 29, 2002 when a North Korean patrol boat crossed the Northern Limit Line, which is the de facto sea border between the two Koreas in the West Sea, and attacked the South Korean Navy's high-speed patrol boat Chamsuri 357 in waters near Yeonpyeong Island.

Six crew of the Chamsuri 357 were killed in the battle -- the vessel's captain Lt. Commander Yun Young-ha, Chief Petty Officers Han Sang-guk, Cho Cheon-hyung, Hwang Do-hyun and Seo Hoo-won, and Petty Officer Second Class Park Dong-hyuk. The Chamsuri 357 was sunk

This is good news. I personally know a couple of hundred ROK Navy guys who are going to be pleased at this change. Being in the military they are not allowed to express their political opinions, but it was clear they have been teed off at the government's ignoring this incident.

In 2003 I was teaching in a navy school. One of the Mr. Kims told this story:

He and his shipmates were in port watching one of the World Cup games when the alarm went off. Fairly aggravated they grabbed their gear and headed out to their ship. Then they were told their mission: fish the bodies of your dead and wounded buddies out of the water. Mr. Kim talked about hard it was to sleep after that mission.

There wasn't a dry eye in the house when he finished.
