My friend just told me he's gonna have to lay low on the booze for a while. He says his last medical checkup showed an enlarged liver, probably due to drinking. He's not an alcoholic but his company has plenty of afterhours drinking.

So I sure hope all of you boozers get your livers checked. I remember meeting this one manager at this company I worked for back in the 1990s, and then finding out he'd died of liver cancer three months after I had met him. Crying or Very sad

It's interesting to consider the effect that Korean alcohol is having on us. My company also has a lot of afterhours drinking which I enjoy a lot, but which is no doubt having a bad effect on my health. I've definitely put on weight since coming to Korea, a direct result I think of working long hours and drinking empty calories in the form of soju, baekseju, etc. Back home I drank a lot of vodka and whisky, but it seems that Korean drinks are more fattening. Does anyone have any info on the calorie content of soju, etc.?

55 cals per shot, if I recall from a poster I saw once.

At average walking pace, burning off 55 cals will be done in a little over a kilometer.

My liver (and stomach) took a real beating over xmas and new year. That's why I'm laying off the booze until lunar new year. I even sent home a fat wad of cash just so that I CAN'T afford to drink. Will-power alone would not be enough.

She asked how much you drank before giving a diagnosis?? I hate it when doctors do this sh!t.

Either your liver is fcuked or it isn't. Whether or not you drink soju has nothing to do with it.

Drinking does affect your liver. That's a reasonable question for being in Korea.

still alot of it is hereditary..
some can smoke all their lives until well into their 80's or 90's and then not die of cancer.. others can drink for 10 years then get liver cancer
sure best to not drink or smoke but whats to stop you from getting a brain tumor?

I'm not a heavy drinker, but I take milk thistle supplements. Milk thistle is great for abused livers. Just being in Korea with its environmental pollutants and miscellaneous filth is reason enough to take extra care of your liver.

Yeah, though I've heard that you have to be careful taking milk thistle if you plan to drink aswell. Intensifies the effects of alcohol, apparently.

Doesn't "Fatty liver" mean cirrhosis of the liver?

When a diagnosis is given like the the one above, it's time to quit.

I once had a school principal who taught me the finer points of evading the required "group bonding drinking sessions" which included pouring the soju into an empty rice bowl under the table.

Cheap cigs, cheap booze and a drinking culture that legitimizes and says everythings ok. will eventually destroy you.

For some reason all of the heavy drinkers I knew in Korea had trouble with their pancreas more so than liver. Either way, nothing to play around with

Of course he's addicted to alcohol if his liver's enlarged. Unaddicted people don't drink that excessively. Get real. Get out of denial. Stop drinking now and stay alive and healthy.

In mean time people open threads such as this one:

Vitamin B is good for your liver. Getting regular Hepatitis B shots is also good. Hepatitis B is rife in Korea. Its caused by mixing body fluids much more contagious and deadly than AIDS. Easily spead through sharing a similar pot exchanging soju glasses going down on a hooker.
