Not sure if it's open, but if you're looking for more of an outdoorsy, non-hotel place on the cheap, I'd recommend 무의도, a beachy and mountainous island on the west coast.

For as beautiful as it is, it's crazily close -- from the airport, just take the 222 for 5 minutes to the ferry terminal, and after a 3-minute crossing you're there.

A heated bungalo (read: small shack) on the beach is 30,000 won, and the seafood is spectacular.

Since these Korean winters are warm, I'm planning to do some camping in the next few weeks (tenting for me), so I'd be interested in any other recommendations as well.

If you have the money, fly to Jejudo and rent a car there, it's wonderful.

Otherwise, Gyeongju is nice.

I second going to see Gyeongju, if you are into site seeing away from the coast. It is peaceful, clean, and historic.

Two long weekends in May are coming up. Two in row. Go somewhere in Japan, Taiwan or Hong Kong.

just to clarify, it's not a national holiday, just the wife is taking time off, a whole two days!
Thanks for the ideas, does any one know any decent places on the East coast?
Thanks again.

Actually, all 'red days' in 2008 fall on either a Monday or a Friday until Christmas....

That's going to be wonderful!

Very Happy

Are you sure about the two holiday weekends in a row in May?

I've got a wedding back home to go to and as far as I know there's no long weekend since Buddha's Birthday is on a Saturday.

First Friday of June is a day off though.

I pray that you are right. It would help me out greatly. Will confirm with a coworker that these are holidays that we will actually get off work for.

Thanks!
