or so the city fire department would have thought....

So I am grilling on my "outside" patio with my

as usual, except for one thing...I am slow grilling pork ribs with copious amounts of soaked hickory chips over the fire and leave them be while I prep for other food. Yep, forgot to trim off the excess fat and sure enough some extended flare ups occur. So these flare ups coupled with the smoking hickory chips we've got some good smoke happenin.' Most of the smoke gets blown outside by the floor fan positioned in front (as usual).

I turned off the grill and brought the ribs in for us to eat and we soon have frantic doorbell ringing and door pounding going on.

The fire brigade is rushing to everyone's flat trying to figure out where the fire was. We tell them that our place is fine and they rush off to the next floors.

We're like WTF? There's a fire? Where? And then it dawns on us...oops.

The fire fighters and chief come back to make sure it wasn't coming from our place as the 17th floor guy SWEARS smoke was billowing from below him (there is only 1 apartment on either side of the elevator/per building side so there are only a few residences the fire could originate from).

To make this even better... the dozen or so firefighters, a few officials, 3 fire trucks+ make good entertainment for the 100 or so onlookers.

Great Rolling Eyes

As they bum rush our place going in and out of our rooms I inform them that I was grilling and show them the culprit. They didn't even know what it was and I had about 10 firefighters huddled about all curious like.

Almost in unison the whole lot of them "Eish! Ahhh chem! We came out here because of a barbeque?!" One of the firefighters runs out to the other side of the apartment and yells down below to the rest of the crew, down the stairwell, and on the walkie-talkie to stand down as it's a false alarm.."the foreigner was babikyuing." Yep, the whole area knows it was me....greeeat.

I am curious to know what may come of this. I found the whole incident funny...my wife, well...

But get this...remember, the firefighters assumed there was a fire and were dashing about in full attire trying to locate it. Well, when they were all scattering about my apartment and I brought them to the grill I noticed something that made me laugh and I couldn't tell them why...

They were ALL in their socks. Yep, uh huh...shoes and boots were left at the door!
Razz

Ryst

I should imagine that they had time to take their shoes off because they realised that there wasn't a fire.

I doubt they would bother if there really was a fire.

Either way - good looking bbq. Be careful!

I have this wee image in my head of you then offering them some steak, then all of you sitting around the bbq, drinking beer, slapping each other on the back and laughing.

Reminds me of the time I almost got arrested for robbing a bank.

I was hitchhiking back in the good ol days, but I was stuck in this one spot for hours. I had run out of water, and there was a bank nearby, past some woods with a water spigot on the outside. So I went over, propped my backpack against the outside wall and filled my water bottle. I also filled a container with cold water for my freeze dried ice cream. It was closed, so I figured I wouldn't bother anyone.

I was having a nice drink of cold water when all of the sudden I was surrounded by police cars, lights flashing. I had to lean against the hood of a police car while I was patted down. They explained that I had tripped the silent alarm. I was a bit shaken up, but not too worried.

After some explanation of where I was coming from, where I was going, who I was and what I was doing, the cops graciously dropped the matter. They were just doing their job. (It also helps to carry American Express travelers checks when hitchhiking, as it shows you're not a bum.)

Ah, the good old days, when you could travel the world on a thumb, meeting interesting, generous strangers, when people still trusted each other, and didn't suspect every stranger of being a pervert of axe murderer. You youngins don't realize what a crappy world you have gotten stuck with.

Say, I wonder if this will prevent me from getting my visa extended?

OK...who are you? How didja know? 'Cause my friends know that is exactly what I'd offer...and can you believe it...I actually did offer them some ribs (steaks were last night). There was a bunch of laughter about the incident and they were 'taken aback' by:

As you probably know...that's just 1/2 of it....they were curious about that as well. A few were contemplating the offer of food and drink!

Again, wife of the other hand....

Lesson to be learned; when your neighbours are cooking samgyeopsal on one of those Coleman stoves, call the fire department.

I don't drink a lot, but you've covered the drinks I do go for:

Rye Whiskey, any kind of Rum, though I love the dark stuff the most and Bailey's.
