We had the marriage ceremony at Seoul Masjid (Mosque) in Itaewon.

My wife is Iraqi and I'm British, the Iraqi Ambassador attended the ceremony, and acted as one of the witnesses to the marriage.

Tomorrow my wife and I will go to our respective embassies. I'm a married man! Shocked

On the British Embassy website it said:

Fees
Attesting or legalising a signaure or seal: 27 x2 (for 2 copies of the Report and Certificate of Marriage)
Administering an oath or receinving a declaration or affirmation: 50 x 2 (for 2 copies of the Affidavit of Eligibility for Marriage)

This question is silly but does that mean 2 copies, one for husband and wife. In total it makes about 294,000 won. It's a bit expensive.

My memory is a bit hazy, but I also married in Seoul and from the British embassy we only got one certificate. But I think they keep the other certificate as a record, or send one back to the UK. You'll have to go in and check. As I recall, the staff were very nice and helpful. Don't be surprised at the tight security as you enter the embassy. You'll be checked for bombs! Very Happy

Congratulations my fellow Brit! Very Happy

May you live happily ever after Smile

P.S. Regarding the British Embassy... Nothing comes cheap from there. I could say other things about that place too, but don't get me started!

Congrats, fromtheuk.

When I got married here two years ago, I remember paying around 300,000 total at the British Embassy. Seems much the same as you've been charged.

They must have increased the charges, cos I don't remember paying that much 5.5 years ago??

I found the Brit embassy 10 thousand times better than the Aussie embassy. More expensive, but much faster turn around time for documents and much friendlier.

fromtheuk: You do realise that you are not technically married if you have only been married in the mosque, don't you? You also have to get your marriage recognised by a government office for it to be a legal marriage. Go to the British embassy. They will give you the correct form (if I recall correctly) and send you to a Korean government office that deals with registering marriage. The office we went to was not far from the British embassy, and they were used to foreigners and actually had ceremonial robes so you could have your photo taken as if you were married in a traditional Korean ceremony. Take that option (I recall it was free)- it makes for a couple of fun and colourful pictures to show yor family. Then you will have to pay the Korean office something, and they will sign your document and you take it back to the British embassy.

Do all this AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! And immediately start keeping records to prove you have a genuine marriage. Get stuff done in both your names. Get bills sent to your address in both your names. Get friends to send you cards addressed to both of you at your address. You need to amass plenty of evidence of your relationship so that you don't fall foul of immigration down the line. Despite having a genuine marriage and a child together, my husband and I were really fed about by immigration as we didn't have the sort of proof they deemed appropriate. My father was dying and we needed to relocate fast, and Australian immigration fed us so much, we were seperated for 6 months and llost all our savings. But that's a long story for another day..

Big_Bird - Thank you for the advice. I know legally our marriage isn't recognised yet.

But we intend to go to our embassies tomorrow to get that done. I have been told previously about going to the Korean authorities to get a marriage recognised here, but I intend to ask the British embassy about that tomorrow.

I'm sorry to hear about your nasty experience with immigration. Once we get everything done at our embassies, Korean government office and immigration, we can then sit back and relax.

Tomorrow it's: Visit the British Embassy, Iraqi Embassy, and Korean government office.

Hopefully on Friday, we will go to immigration to get a spousal visa for my wife.

Thank you everybody for your comments.
