I've got a toaster oven and am hooked on baked potatoes. I just use regular, run of the mill brown skin potatoes. But...should I peel them or not? I scrub them good under running water, then wrap them in tin foil and bake them in the oven for about an hour. But is the skin safe to eat? We eat the skin back in Canada, the U.S., etc.

I peel my carrots (obviously), mushrooms, cucumbers. I don't peel my apples. But potatoes, what to do?

Ahem... to the Off-Topic Forum you go...

But I don't think there's anything wrong with the potato skins here. Smile

It's not a baked potato without the skin.

You can eat the skin if you wash it very thoroughly.

You really should peel your apples because they are very waxy.

Why do you peel mushrooms and cucumbers?! That's weird!

I was wondering the same thing...

As for the potato, for the vitamins and more nutrition, the peel is a must.

Peel all the way on almost all fruits and veggies. That's where all the nutrients and fiber are. Get a special scrub brush and use some dish soap if they're waxy.

OP, you do know that you can nuke a potato in the microwave in about 5 minutes, don't you?

I'm glad others commented on peeling mushrooms. He must be talking about some other kind of mushroom than the ones I use. I flashed on some guy standing over the sink for hours with a pair of tweezers peeling off the skin.

Thanks for the info. Glad to hear there's no worries. Had some in the oven when I made the post, got a response to my question before they were finished.

scrub the little buggers well, shove a big nail through it, and roast away. Microwaves are pretty bad, but they are good for starting spuds....
