No, it's more of a case of:

This is how I feel as an American reading this thread about a Korean-American in Korea discussing their experiences through photography and art-school bibbityboo:

I dislike having to write about my own work, but due to the amount of misconceived notions and assumptions floating around this forum, it seems necessary.
I apologize that the picture's quality does not capture all the colors, textures and feeling of the carpet.
Without having to spoon-feed you aesthetic discernment, here's some food for thought:
1. Visually, what are the colors and patterns and why would one choose to juxstapose them? What cultural backgrounds do they evoke? What is their character, why are they there, what do you think of and might there be a reason for how your eyes move around the image? For instance, since the pattern is so spread out and there are no completely obvious focal points out of photographic contrast (the pure white-pure dark ratios and balance that comprise photographic standards), what ideas can be drawn from the fact that you focus not on the OBVIOUS eye candy, but more on the difference between the patterns? An expression within the shoes' gape?
B. How are the shoes positioned? Do they evoke, perhaps, a taeguki, or are they countercurrent to each other in a way that is more complementary than the relationship between the fore and background? What feelings do they exhibit and are they idiomatic of other issues (just having stepped out of shoes, being in another's shoes)?
C. Consider the materials, apparent and implicit processes involved in manufacturing a carpet (which, in the pictorial surface, becomes a background) as well as the shoes. What hints can you gather from the textile quality? Which is the background and which is foreground? What are the implications for what happened before and what will happen and how do these implications refer to larger issues in our current context (a new president stepping into office)? |
Is this a homework assignment that you are trying to get us to answer for you?
I get a feeling I know why you are having such a hard time in Korea. |

| You might not want to use a 1.99 camera from wal-mart. Those are some of the crappiest photo's I have ever seen. |

This is my response as a Canadian reading a meaningless thread started by a po-mo Korean American whose head is still reeling due to withdrawal symptoms from leaving the Ivory Tower:
It has nothing to do with this thread, but then this thread isn't about anything anyway. And I guarantee my photo will spark more interest than that of the OP's. Am I right? |

OP, I liked your post. If people are all offended because you posted a picture, screw 'em. Half of them are just irritated they couldn't figure it out. The other half are just the typical mouthbreathers who criticize everything. Don't worry about it.
With art, things can be interpreted a lot of ways, and so I appreciate you explaining your motivation.
And to the poster who put up the picture of the bunnies, that made me laugh out loud. Thanks. |

please don't be upset, because I've never met you, but your tone in print reminds me of the guys who used to encourage the 'hippie chicks' in their drivel in the hopes of getting some. |

Exactly right. The original post lacked explanation. It was just a grainy image of two hippie-looking slippers on a hippie-looking rug. |

Since when does art need an explanation? Art is meaningful in the way it expresses itself to the viewer, not necessarily in its "correct" description. In fact, I enjoyed the beginning of the thread that had little else but the picture. Jokingly or not, people were taking shots at what the OP meant. Some people had some good ideas. That's the point of art, to get people thinking.
I love how many threads we have where people bitch about how Korean kids aren't taught how to be independent and critically think... and then someone puts up a post demanding interpretation and everyone's panties get in a bunch because the OP didn't give us all the "correct" answer. |
