I get some regular emails from Serious Teachers....you know, job postings stuff. I got one today that had the logo of EO Recruiting and Consulting.

It mentioned salary ranges of 1.9 to 4 million KW at CDI and 'various private language institutes'.

I've got a Masters. I teach at high school (Level 2) in Namyangju and I'm only getting around 2.2 mil a month. I'm not starving and I'm having a good time but I'd sure like more money. Are there really places paying 4 mil or is that ad some sort of 'come-on'?

I've heard of CDI but I don't know that much about them.

If you want to work every second of the day 6 days a week I'm pretty sure you can easily hit 4 mil a month. If people just plod along doing 20 - 30 hrs a week they will stay on their base salary.

1.9 is way too low. You'd be a dumb-ass to take anything below 2.2 unless you were working 4 days a week or had crazy holidays or something.

CDI always post about 4 or 6 million won jobs to get you in to interview, then you end up being offered the same rate as most everyone else at CDI. Classic bait and switch.

You can make 4 mill by getting a job with light hours, then add one 90-minute morning and one 90-minute evening private. You'll be making well over 4.

One would presume you are only suggesting privates if he has the correct visa to allow him to teach them.

It's possible to make over 5million a month. I do it by teaching a total of 37 hours at the two locations that are legally on my visa. My original hagwon allowed me to add a public school in the day.

There are many international schools, test prep academies, and specialized hagwons that pay up E-2 visa holders up to and over 4 million/month on one contract at one location.

It's tough to get one of these premium positions, though. In addition to needing substantial qualifications and experience, you often need to have connections, as these jobs are not usually posted.

The 4- or 6-million won CDI jobs you're talking about are likely for the specialized CDI Prep branches in Bundang, Gangnam, and Pyeongchon. This is certainly not a bait-and-switch; these positions and the salary are real, though again you need to have significant teaching experience, and preferably test prep experience. Each location hires every few months. Other CDI jobs could be quite lucrative, especially with advancement to head teacher positions and with supplementary work (marking, R&D etc.).

You might try looking around the areas of Gangnam, Seolleung, Daechi, and Apgujeong for a host of other specialized academies with similar compensation rates. Your Masters degree would carry some weight. But often these jobs come with long hours, split shifts, and the stress of really needing to deliver high-quality lessons to demanding students. Public schools also generally have better vacation time, and give you your afternoons and weekends free, so it's really a trade-off.
