The sport is far from dead in America.
Watch the first 20 seconds of this music video of his highlights and you'll see why he's getting so much money:

Inhumane ability.
If the team hadn't signed him by this summer any other team could have signed him to even a richer contract. |

That's not 100% true. If he hadn't signed buy the summer, other teams could have offered him a contract, which the Capitals had the right to match. What they've done here is ensure that there wasn't going to be a bidding war for him.
Regardless, he's insanely talented and amazing to watch! |

please forgive my ignorance. it has been a long time since i cared about the NHL:
isn't there a salary cap in the NHL ?
are NHL contracts guaranteed (like MLB) or shammed up hoaxes and voidable by the team like the NFL? |

There is a salary cap in the NHL, but Ovechkin's (sp?) contract is a 13 year contract, so per year he fits under the cap. |

Washington had to sign him. He is their franchise.
The problem for Washington now is that they probably won't be able to afford to sign anyone to help him. They might make the playoffs in a few years but I don't expect any trips to the Stanley Cup finals.

Not dead. But the NHL is pretty much a fringe organization in the US right now. Their TV rating are comparable to darts and the national spelling bee. |

Ovechkin is Great! I enjoy watching him play and he loves the game, he is like a kid out there. When he scores he shows such emotion! The best part of his contract for me is that he negotiated it himself.
If you have ever seen the guy, he is always laughing and smiling and joking around...I can see the how the negotiations would have started...
AO: Ok! I want 200 MILLION! (with a big grin on his face, knowing he is playing around, but checking their reaction!)
Another thing about Alex, they asked him why he wears a tintied visor, he said that so he can check out the chicks during the game without being caught!
My kind of fella! |

| I will remain unimpressed with hockey until the day that black men begin to take an active part in the sport. |
