Well....compared to Korea? It's better in almost every conceivable way, except salaries for ESL'ers. |

It's good for a week max. Then the Thais and the bullsheit involved in dealing with them gets old.
A good place to kill a few days at the beach but never to live or work. |

I think Thailand could be a great place to live if you have money to just retire or start a company, but the finances in teaching does not add up as I met a couple of teachers already who come to live life instead of making the big bucks and saving them like us Korea based teachers do. It would be cool to be just like Jim Thompson, an American who came to Thailand to start a silk trading company and hit it big, but got lost one day and never came home. It's easy to think that 2 m won per month is low pay, but Korea pays the most money and benefits since it has the money to coerce teachers into such an unpleasant environment, despite it being the most safest and honest place I have been.
Today was my 3rd day in my 1st trip to Thailand and I must say the weather is very hot and the arts are very much alive, but the touts and aggressive sales people make it where no one can relax or feel safe. They always said that you go to Khao Sarn to meet other travelers and exchange experiences, but everything are running around in a state of anxiety due to the stresses and pressures the touts, pollution, and police are putting on tourists. Last night, the police raided the rooms in my guest house, some 2 hours after I went to sleep, which was aweful and no one was doing any drugs. Thai police don't play around which makes it no place to be partying. Of course, I am sure the rest of Thailand is not like Bangkok which I only have been to Bangkok so far. They sure are about the money in a serious way.
If you go, only stay in Bangkok for 2 nights and then take a public bus or train to other areas as there is little more than the very impressive Wat temples in Bangkok unless you come for partying and red light district activities(your asking for big trouble). It's a great place to shop for summer clothes and fine arts, but very tiring after 2 days in the polluted, congested, and anxiety inducing city. Watch your wallet, be careful when paying for things, don't look for drugs, and lock your door with your own padlock!
Don't even mess with the tourist travel agencies on Khao San and Rambuttri streets as they will present huge head aches to sour your trip. Head aches like being dumped by a nameless tour operator and possibly worse. Learn to take the regular buses and trains to travel instead of tours. Buy services directly from providers on the spot such as at a train station or ferry. I heard the long distance tour buses might even gas the passengers to rob them so don't take any chances. I was hoping for top quality tour operators who have a name that I could depend on since navigation is difficult and I don't know what I'm doing, but unfortunately I will have to travel without the assistance of those in the know.
Thailand is that proverbial tropical paradise, but it presents huge headaches and problems to be solved with every single step you take, even if you just want to take a vacation. Now staying for a long time might be a very difficult challenge, but rewarding in a way that has nothing to do with money. I can't say Thailand rules, but that all depends on what you want in life and if money matters to you. If money matters, go to Korea, but if living an interesting life matters, come to SE Asia. This is what a couple teachers here said and it adds up. I just feel like I got out of prison having left Korea a couple days ago. LOL |

I am sorry dude, but many people would disagree with you. But your right its a good place to chill. If your chasing the bucks then of course its not the place for you, well if you could hack living in BBK then you might make a bit more.
Thailand isnt about the money, if you have done some more traveling up north you could see a whole different side to thailand, and one where a lot of ex-pats have made it their home.
Regarding the bull chit, dude you probably didnt have the time to relax enough, after 2 or 3 months there you would probably calm down a bit and start living a bit slower. I lived there for 4.5 years, a great place, and im going back for good soon.
Peace;) |

Have you hit it rich? I hope so cause if you worked all your life in Thai as an esl teacher you'd be right out of luck come retirement. Planning a business? Don't invest more than you can afford to loose.... |

You're on glue!
The Thais are some of the most racist, xenophobic people in Asia!
Of course, that's my opinion and also the opinion of many people whom I've spoken with. |

Whoa, you found out about Thailand! You're quite the adventurer. Did you hit the exotic Khao San road in Bangkok? You're hitting some new exotic territory there.
You're only the 999,999,999 person to do so Are you going to exotic phuket? Pattaya?? Phi phi island??? Koh Phangan????? EVERYONE has already been there already. Where have you been???
I disagree about Thailand being completely great. Weather and beaches are great, but the Thais are so tired of dealing with tourist. They're just plain rude to us now. |

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. The beaches and food are fine. However, the people are often rude and ignorant - you walk into their shop and if you don't buy their T-shirt or postcards, their attitude is "F*ck ya!"
And Violent!
I've seen some pretty nasty stuff with the Thais - the men particularly.
Definitely don't mess with the Thais - particuarly the men when they're drinking. Stay away! |

I saw 3 guys get severely beaten down in my last trip a few weeks ago. All of them were asking for it though. On one occasion i was drinking with 2 steroid abusing fins, one of whom thought it would be funny to randomly walk round the bar punching falangs. He was so big, none of the other falangs wanted to do anything about it. The thai security eventually arm locked him and marched him outside where his mate joined them and they both started swinging chairs at the security. From out of nowhere a bunch of thai guys came and bottled both of them in the head, they both went down and were stomped into unconsciousness. Some falangs who were watching were going on about how thai guys are animals, imo the thais were just doing what they had to do and hopefully they taught the fins a lesson, although i wouldn't be 100% sure about that.
For what it's worth, this was in pattaya, a place with a dubious reputation, but i was absolutley crap faced drunk for a good part of my stay there and nothing even remotely untoward came my way. |

Not glue, soju! Haha lol
Hummmmmmmmm, ok well I'll try and be as unbiased as I can about this.
After 4.5 years in Thailand I have experienced some of the harsh side of Thai life. But only really in the schools that I worked at. In regards to being racist, well yes its there but Asia is full of that sort of thing, especially and more so in Korea. Its hard to go anywhere not find some xenophobia. After being a resident in Thailand, I never really had any racism pointed toward myself but you might have had a bad experience or two?
I am actually a bit shocked, I really am, I think they are nice people and very friendly.
Now, I spent most of my time in Northern Thailand which is a world away from all the hustle and bustle of the south, where if I hazard a guess is where you were?
In regards to all the people you have spoken to. how many is that? Most of the people I have spoken to would probably disagree. I have spoken to a few people like yourself who didnt get on that well in Thailand, and well in my opinion they werent really cut out for travelling, should have stayed at home.
However, my own open mindedness which has stood me in good stead has been stretched to breaking point here in Korea. If you ask me theres more racism here than anywhere else on the planet!
Good one, Peace!
