I was listening to the econtalk podcast and they were talking about the economics of online worlds. Interesting. Anyway, it prompted me to check out Second Life. Being it's free. I have lots of free time sinks and don't need to pay $15 a month for one.

Anyway, you walk around. You fly. People who look nothing like their avatars have klunky sex. I guess maybe it's IRC with eye candy.

I had a little flutter with it about a year ago. I didn't get into it as my old PC at home couldn't handle the intensity of the graphics etc. I was mildly interested in it, but it soon subsided.

The BBC own an island on there apparently.

Its indeed an elaborate IRC channel with visual effects added.

the difference is that to use IRC you actually have to know what you want, whereas with Second life .... you just start the program and start wandering around.

I think it's designed to combat insomnia.

Didn't you have the nice avatar of the monk with the beer? I liked that avatar.

I got into this game a couple of years ago after a spell in hospital. I needed something to keep me busy while unable to walk about.

One the best features of the game is having bands streaming live into the game.

Glasweigian Band - The Hedrons, Duran Duran has bought an Island and will perform live, Suzanne Vega, to name a few.

People control the bands' avatars (online figures). A Dutch Band - E-quad, for example, streamed their concert live into the game whilst their Second Life concert was streamed simultaneously in the background of their RL concert.

A lot of fun, great music, and yes - a very easy way to fill in a couple of hours at night after a looong day at work.
It is a very mixed community of people, and does involve spending SOME RL money on it if you want your avitar to look more detailed than the one you start with.
People design clothing, wigs, houses, furniture, electrical equipment such as tv's, stereos, PCs etc - so you can furnish a house should you buy one.

Here is a youtube link showing a sped up version of the designer making the guitar for Suzanne Vegas concert.

There is the potential to earn a lot of RL money in designing these things. You can also get online 'jobs' such as DJ-ing, which can be a lot of fun.

Here are a couple of pics of my avitar in SecondLife, and a comparison pic of me on Halloween last year. So some of us do look a BIT like our avitars, although yes, most don't!
(I hope these pics work ... last time I tried, they all came out too small to see anything .. if they don't, oh well.)
