http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/breach/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401997/

The class is 16 middle school boys. They, like all boys their age, prefer action movies, but I was wondering if I might be able to squeeze this one into their attention span.

Any thoughts?

I'm also thinking about using The Good Shepherd then going into the new 007.

The idea is to use enough movies of a series or genre to function as a springboard for a laidback but lexical lesson.

They're bored to tears with The Matrix series and the LOTRs.

If Matrix bored them wait til they get half way through Breach. I quite liked the movie, but at 16 years... doubt it would have entertained me much. Good Shepherd might have more of a hope, but still a bit long isn't it? Try something like Spartan, or Chinatown - you know, a smart thriller that still has a bit of asskicking in it.

Try Holes.
The screenplay is pretty faithful to the novel because it was also written by Sachar. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0311289/

I opted for Ocean's 11. It's a long movie but it's funny with some swearing thrown in to spice it up, that'll get their attention certainly. I'm using all English subtitles too. Hopefully they can follow it, they seem to be pretty high level so far.

Those movies are garbage for middle schoolers lol. Try "I am Legend", "The Golden Compass", something more Sci fi and more action.

I'm doing some of the old original "Twilight Zone" shorts. One in particular that aired in 1962, "An Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge." It has less talking and is a great one. Another is "The Howling Man" about a man who seems crazy, and has a strange prisoner.

Brief synopsis, watch the short, ask/answer questions, rewatch short. I plan on doing a couple days out of the 2 weeks. I see it as a good break and seeing something different than the usual cartoon crap they watch here.

They seemed to enjoy Ocean's 11. They were a bit confused by all the characters though. They were asking for Rush Hour 3 and some Austen Powers... I'm not sure about the rating on Austen though.

My student assistant is going to try to find subs for No Country For Old Men. I am sure they could follow it and the villain is just so freaky.

I actually used Pan's Labyrinth with English subtitles for my 7 middle schoolers. The girls liked it because it was about a young girl and it was "so sad!!!!" and the boys liked it because of the random bits of violence.
