Who are the foreigeners on TV, and what is the general opinion of them. I see Ida Daussey a lot if that's what her name is, but the Koreans I've spoken to think she is weird with her Americanized Korean accent. The best foreigeners I have heard as Korean speakers have been the individuals from India or Pakistan or some other Asian country. They have the accent and the pronounciation down perfectly. When they do use someone from India or Pakistan in a TV program I notice the Koreans looking on with a little bit of respect. When a westerner gets on a TV programe the Korenas watching seem to snicker.

The big tall Western dood who is usually on the Korean dramas is supposed to have an excellent knowledge of Korean, but he still has a sort of Western twang to his pronounciation.

Considering that Ida Daussy speaks English with a noticeable French accent, I wonder why you think her Korean is American accented.

I was under the impression she was from the U.S. My mistake. I guess they make money from their TV appearances otherwise I don't think they would be doing it.

They all look as silly as I sound speaking Korean. That is not to say that they don't have good pronunciation. It just seems odd.

I was a part time cab driver in Melbourne a long time ago, and irememmber picking up a couple of guys from singapore. They went through great lengths to impress upon me their knowledge of English idioms and swear words. I kinda wanted to hide my head in shame. Made me cringe in fact. I wonder if that's the way we make Koreans feel when we try to make an impression with our spoken korean.

The one's who actually take time out to listen then are probably the thick skinned ones, or maybe the stoneheads.

The Asian people are here as workers, and they usually speak English as well. knowledge of two languages enables one to pick up a third a lot easier. They work where they have to use the language on a day to day basis, so it's a given that they will speak more like a native speaker than us who who use the language sparingly.

People who come here to work are actually required to take a test of Korean proficiency before they can get a work permit. In some countries like Nepal and Vietnam they have Korean language academies.

I think it's great that she has progressed as much as she has, and maybe in a few years her Korean will be better- and even if she still has an accent does that really matter? Some people can never lose their accents.

Imagine a world where having an accent doesn't get you laughed at. Oh wait... I'm basically describing the rest of the world.

Robert Holley is another Waegukin on Korean TV. Aren't they all just your token foreigeners in the Korean zoo to be gawked at like monkeys. You know the Korean way of "Uga,Uga,Uga funny white person swinging on the vine" so to speak.

I think the majority Of koreans have that opinion of waegukins on TV. Same way we feel about George Bush when he opens his mouth.

A lot of Koreans are really impressed by the misuda and their Korean skills.

But I know for a fact, that the show is scripted and rehearsed for 6 hours because as I was interviewing for the show at KBS Hall, a few of the girls were there talking to the producers in English as they wrote the script together for them to memorize. Prolly not a surprise for most of you, but the Koreans whom I tell never believe me.

You can't honestly believe that. Laughing at foreign accents has gotta account for a decent percentage of popular comedy. Not saying the Korean laughing thing is right- it annoys the hell out of me- but if you've never heard anyone mock an Indian accent or make fun of how Chinese can't say 'L', well then..... wow.

(peachgaru, thanks for the revelation on misuda... i KNEW it! are you going to join?)
